Another try out of old rules. Reaper looked far too involved for my old brain, so ran a few small encounters with 1981 War Hammer, leaving out heroes and magic which I've found in the past tend to dominate proceedings.
I used Dark Elves and Dwarves.
I can see why they increased the chance to hit by 1, I found that melees tended to bog down and last a quite a while. The morale rules meant they tested when getting below 50% and regimental morale meant they fought to very few models. They rout if lose a third in one round of melee, so the units got down to about 25% (using 12 man units). I did not have any fear inducing models which automatically rout opponents if they win. Shooting was often more effective, hitting easier, and Dark Elf repeating crossbows put down a prodigious fire and crossbows wound on anything but a 1 against normal toughness creatures. This was adjusted in later editions by increasing normal toughness (which is represented by a letter in this edition but could easily be a number and was indeed converted to that in later versions).
They are a nice basic set, and inevitably some things are not really dealt with. I had some routers jammed up against a second line which it seems they could not interpenetrate in this edition.
But when all is said and done I scratched a nostalgia itch and amused myself pushing some toy soldiers around the table.
