Cloaked Predator
« on: 14 February 2025, 02:00:02 AM »
I like the original Predator movie a lot and bought a pack of Copplestone’s “hunter aliens” a while ago. Then it occurred to me that it would be very cool if a “cloaked” version was available. They don’t exist, though, so I tried making one. I made a mould and poured clear resin into it and it turned out okay. Painting it was simple, just gave it a light wash of Army Painter green tone and a layer of gloss varnish to get the glassy look back.

I’m very much an amateur at mould making, though, and ripped the heck out of the mould getting the figure out. Mould making silicone isn’t cheap, so this guy is probably one of the more expensive single 28mm figures I’ll ever have.  :?  Still, he’s now a unique addition to my collection!

A side by side shot of the original and the cloaked version.

Thanks! Unless Mark Copplestone decides to produce and sell transparent ones, this guy is a one-off. I have no idea how feasible that would even be - producing metal spin cast figures is a different beast than casting resin commercially. Maybe would be feasible, though, since Northstar is producing a few quite good opaque resin figures already…

This guy was a bit labour intensive and I wrecked the mould. It’s strictly a vanity project.

Brilliantly done! I thought it was 3D-printed in clear resin! Making a mold and casting it was a fantastic idea, and it's accessible to those without a 3D printer!

they did exist... I don't remember the company that made them, but there was a range of not-Predators available maybe 15-20 years back, available in clear slightly blue resin... I do remember one had a cricket bat for some reason...

could it have been Ainsty? probably not, but they did exist...

Yes, Ainsty used to do some clear resin Predators, called INAP's. Regretably, they no longer do. Good effort making this though. Well done. Looks great!

Very cool! I did pretty much the same thing with a Prodos miniature seven years ago, however my mould lasted a little longer and let me produce a few more copies...  :D

Regretfully the resin has turned yellow over the years. The predators aren't that cloaked anymore. I might have better put them in a box than leaving them exposed to daylight in the display cabinet.

Thanks for the comments!

I’m not surprised that others have also used clear resin for predators, it’s a good (if fiddly) option. Yours turned out great, Michi. And thanks for mentioning the yellowing, I’ll keep that in mind. I plan to put a layer of UVLS varnish on the resin figure (my understanding is that UV light causes the resin to go yellow), but storing it in a dark location should also help.
