New Movie for inspiration
« on: January 15, 2010, 05:01:52 PM »
Haven't seen it yet but it is most definately on my to do list...

<object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/JKfZrbS79To&hl=en_GB&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/JKfZrbS79To&hl=en_GB&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>

Plenty of inspiration in the trailer alone though... Just thought I'd share in case anyone's missed it.

You know one  movie i wanted to see but never got to was, "The Road". Any one see that?
"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

Saw "The Road" a couple of months ago at the London Film Festival, really good film. One of those films that stays with you a long time after you've seen it.
I go to pieces so fast that people get hit by the shrapnel.

I saw The Book of Eli last night.

Loved it. More about the journey of one man than an excruciating look at a post-apocalyptic society, but very cool. There is quite a twist at the end...

I heard a lot of interesting comments coming out of the theatre. My two favorite "dumb" comments..

"It's nothing like Avatar."
"Of course it isn't. It's a different kind of movie."
"Yeah, but Avatar was so much better."

"I don't get it."
"Well, you really need to know the bible to understand the message of the movie."

(And no, no you don't, for those who haven't seen it. That's sort of like saying you need to understand Fuel efficiency to get Mad Max.)

And, a bonus...

"That was the worst movie I've ever seen."
"Why? I thought it was good."
"It was too bleak."
"It's a post-apocalyptic movie."
"I don't like movies that make me think. It was terrible."

Anyway, worth a look if you have the time.

I saw the Book of Eli last night and I enjoyed it.

Of course having the Atomic Cafe 1957 range peaked my interest even though this was set 30 years after a nuclear war.

What I enjoyed the most was just seeing the films vision of an apocalyptic landscape - buildings, cities, cars, dress, etc.

It was a decent story with some twists and surprises.

Denzel was good as usual, Gary Oldman plays the nasty town leader, and Mila, well any movie with her is worth seeing  :)

Interesting to those who watched the HBO series Rome, Ray Stevenson who played Titus Pullo had decent part.

The so called twist at the end ruined the movie for me making it well... to hard to believe(pardon the pun)
Denzel played well...Denzel
Gary played well... Gary
and  Mila is cute and played her role on the 70s show really badly.
Most of the rest of the actors had bit roles and phoned in the part.

On the good side
thetwo all to short fight scenes were good and one fight scene was ok till the end of the movie spoiled it.

If you want to see an interesting Post Apoc movie with a twist and twisted ending see A boy and his dog (1975) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072730/

I don't if you noticed it or not in the Book of Eli, but there was a direct hommage to A Boy and his Dog.  In the scene where Eli is in Carnegies Hotel/Bar/Brothel there is a poster on the wall for that very movie.

My take on it was it was a good movie.  But the twist at the end unravelled a large portion of what I had previously enjoyed.  Take the twist out and it's great. I will be seeing it again to see if there were clues in the movie that lead to the twist (like there were in the movie The Sixth Sense - "I see dead people").

For the mini enthusiast, I think the terrain ideas it generated was fab.  I look forward to replicating Eli's rescue of Solara, as a battlefield made of grey primed toiletpaper tubes.

All in all, if you are fan of the post-apoc genre its a must see.  Otherwise its worth a matinee price.

As for the comments about the road - great book, the movie was killed by test screenings that took out the heaviest scenes from the book, and added way too much Charlieze Thero in my opinion.  Still worth Matinee and will still be added to my Post-apoc movie collection (along with Book of Eli)

I’m going to the movie tomorrow but I was wondering which film I should go see? I wonder if The Book of Eli is any good when your not "of the religious type" ???
Critics I've seen are either really good or really bad...  :?

There’s also Legion playing but I can’t find critics anywhere… Of course it only officially start playing tomorrow but most of the time critics are available beforehand anyway… but not this time though  :?

Calimero -

Nah, you really don't have to be religious to appreciate it. Certainly there's stuff in there about faith, and the power of religion, but part of the message of the movie is that it's entirely dependent upon how that power is used. Just my opinion, granted.
