EotD - movie inspiration
« on: August 27, 2012, 04:25:58 AM »
Guys , just looking for a bit of 'movie inspiration' ... any recommendations appreciated.

I've seen the recent 'classics' , Dracula, Wolfman, Frankenstein...

Also which might be suitable for the younger viewer (9yrs)? He's watched the Mummy series, and Sherlock Holmes & League of Ex. Gents... any others that might be OK without being too scary?

I was thinking Carry on Screaming & Young Frankenstein for him, if I can find them at the rental shop...

Cheers
Scott

Although not really dealing with any supernatural, these really set the atmosphere of the period. "Shanghai Noon" and "Shanghai Knights" also the Jackie Chan version of "Around the World in 80 Days". And like all Jackie Chan movies very funny.

Young Sherlock Holmes might be a good place to start. Produced by Spielebrg back in the 80s. It has an Indiana Jones vibe wind includes mummies and secret cults. Good fun, especially as the heroes are children, it should be perfect.

If it's still avaiable you might want him to look at Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein, Dracula and the Werewolf. Lovely old skool and hilarious 'horror'. Cheers

Vidoq or as it was know in the USA as Dark Portals, is about a French Detective trying to figure out a series of murders during the Revolution.

The whole thing is told in 'back flashes' as Depardeu (Vidoq) gets killed in the first 5 min...

Really worth watching.  I don't know French, but the subtitles and dubbing was decent...

Gangs of New York might be worth a look.
We recently spent a couple of hours watching the special features disc from the 2 disc GoNY dvd set, and thinking how the rules should work nicely in a GoNY setting.
Most of the film gangs would obviously just become unaffiliated Gentlemen's Clubs, but the gangs have a dissolute corrupt nature so are definitely not good, but might perhaps just manage neutral, and rife corruption in the city should get them a modifier if arrested.
Also, a central point of the gang rivalry features the fights between rival firefighting groups, so that would give another scenario - firefighting.
There is also fighting between metropolitan and municipal police so that might give another prisoner scenario...

Young SH is great, but the cakes are scary!

I was a little dissappointed with that, it's about Killer on the streets of Paris. Visually nice but lacking a bit.

For a 9 year old Adele Blan Sec might be better though there is nudity and some violence

The original "classics" would be great for a young kid.  Not so much graphic violence, no risk of nudity or objectionable language.
Plus, they are fun.

There's always the action/horror movie Van Helsing and the excellent Sherlock Holmes series from Grenada.

Not for kids, but for you: From Hell and Sweeny Todd.

Captain Kronos- Vampire Hunter maybe? Although I'm hard pressed to call it cinematic magnificence, it certainly seemed well in theme and I certainly enjoyed it.

While not technically gothic horror, "Monster Squad" had all the classic movie monsters in it, and kids are the the heroes of the story.
