Vallejo English Uniform Color - too light?
« on: February 27, 2010, 04:09:46 PM »
I just started painting up some Artizan WWII Commandos with English Uniform as the base color at it seems to be too light to me.

Has anyone had this experience?  Compared to many of the figures (including Artizan's examples) it seems like a great highlight color, not basecoat.

Is my eye off?  Or the lighting in my office?  Or is this how they're supposed to look?

Also, would anyone suggest using a delvan mud wash on this color?

What color is the primer that you use? Is it light or dark?

@ErikB: I agree, I find this colour a bit too light for my tastes as well.

I have used it as a base coat over black (excellent coverage, I found), then shaded it (Delvan Mud works well, as you suggested), then re-establish it as a base-mid colour, then highlight over top.  A final wash can also tone down the colour and the highlights (I have used Gryphonne Sepia and Ogryn Flesh before with good results - depending on if you want a more yellow or more pinkish tone).

Over black primer.  Wow, it sure covered well.  I wish I could find a white that would do that!

Thanks for the ideas of ogryn flesh and sepia.  The sepia will make more of a yellow color and the ogryn pink, is that right?

I was hoping for a nice brown built up a little lighter.  BUT, if this English Uniform color is accurate then I'm quite happy.  My painting tends to be too dark, anyway, so I'm trying to lighten up (in more ways than one, ha ha ha).

What about the webbing?  Was going to use deneb stone but what about giving it some depth?  Anyone have some ideas?

Thanks a bunch.

The Brit uniform in reality lightened up very quickly in use because of fading apparently ... same with the canvas for the kit. So the lightened appearance with a devlan or the FOW umber wash looks good usually.

That is the coolest website since sliced bread.  Awesome.  Thanks heaps!

So, I did a delvan mud wash over the english uniform and the whole figured darkened, not just the cracks.  Seems the Vallejo paint is matt enough (or porous enough) that the wash was caught everywhere.  This would drive me totally mental if I were trying to shadow creases only BUT in this case it turned out to be EXACTLY what I was after.

I think I'm in business...!

Thanks a bunch, folks.

Some alternatives: Vallejo Khaki, Vallejo Green Brown and the three part British tank crew set in their Panzer Aces series. Vallejo Kahki makes a good highlight for their green brown.

Thanks, Carlos.

One more thing I noticed - I put a drybrush layer of graveyard earth on the base and it is almost exactly the same color as the delvan mud washed english uniform color.  My eye can't make out the difference.

I'll need to re-drybrush the base so it doesn't look too much like the figure :o) but it seems that perhaps graveyard earth basecoat with english uniform layering may do the trick, too.

Anyone ever try this?

-> Vallejo Burnt Umber
-> Vallejo German Cammo Med. Brown
-> Vallejo English Uniform

Is that for the base or for the uniform?
