Vallejo : Shade & Light
« on: February 03, 2010, 01:51:13 PM »
Hello
I'm to lazy and have not enought time to really paint my miniatures like a pro one, so i won't like mixing painting for my shades and lights.
I know there is quickshade or others stuffs, but i like the Reaper or Foundry techniques to give us a 3 tones colors : base + shade + light. with references.
As a paint with Vallejo, does it exist something like this ? A website or link, personal work...

Thanks

Very useful. Thanks Hammers!
A CANADIAN local hobby store with a small selection of historical wargames miniatures (mainly from Warlords). They also have a great selection of paint and hobby accessories from Vallejo, Army painter, AK Interactive, Green Stuff World and more.; https://tistaminis.com/

There would be some nice results putting some of those on neat  :o I think you have to imagine them put on as thin coats so the base colour shows through.

That standard "Basecolor, Highlight, Shadow" chart for Vallejo has been around for some time now.  I've tried some of their combinations and liked them, and some... not so much   :?.  I'd advise using it as a starting point only.

Upon reading the article closely they (Vallejo) stress that it is important to blend the hilite and shadow with the basecolor so nuance blend into them. So if you are looking for ready made blends, Vallejo may not be the way to go after all. Sorry. I'll leave now. :?

Actually Vallejo arwe great for ready-made blands, just don't use their chart!  :D Their retardant is an excellent product and definitely helps if you want to try wet blending their suggested colors though. Through trial and error I came up with my own triads over time though. A few I like are (from darkest to lightest):

Burnt Cadmium Red
Cavalry Brown
Flat Red       (stop here for a nice dull "redcoat" brick red)
Scarlet or Vermillion

Dark Prussian Blue
Prussian Blue
50/50 Prussian Blue and Flat Blue or Medium Blue

German Camo Orange Ochre
Yellow Ochre
Pale Sand

That's the thing though, Kralsaa asked in his original post whether Vallejo had any ready packed triads. I am afraid the question still is no.

I use my own Vallejo and other triads for certain standard paintjobs, like skin, kakhi or tan uniforms, black, white, red but blend experimentally otherwise.

Some time ago there was a file on the Steve Dean forum which gave a conversion from the Foundry Triads to Vallejo. I could let you have a copy if you wish.

You can have a few indications on the colours match of the firsts sets of Foundry Paint System vs. Vallejo here : http://colors.silicon-dragons.com/full_line.php

Also, at the end of Wargames, Soldiers and Strategy (WSS) there often a painting guide that focus on a different subject each time, which give the colours they used for a "3 layers technique"… Last November, the subject was different depictions of a Georges Washington figures using Vallejo colours (except the gold which was GW). Some little mixing may be require though.
