Quick Shade alternatives?
« on: August 26, 2015, 07:29:35 AM »
Looking for alternative product for Quick Shade that I can use for shading and I need to be able to do it in a large batch. Also an alternative to the Matt Varnish that can be used on a large project.

In the US, I think Minwax Polyshades is popular - colours like the Walnuts in particular.

Matte varnish... To be honest, I'd just get a UV-resistant non-yellowing water-based polyurethane varnish from the same hardware store and brush it onto the finished dry models.

^What he said. QuickShade is basically just overpriced wood laquer, so you can just buy a can from the hardware store and maybe add your own color to it.

As for matte varnish, I guess lots of people are fond of Testor's Dullcoat, although I think it hasn't been available for a few years in the EU, at least.

I agree Dullcote is amazing, but at the same time it's not particularly cheap and only comes in small cans (at least the spray stuff which I use does).
Therefore, for a big project, I probably wouldn't recommend it.

On the other hand, that depends on how "big" big is!  lol

Well it's actually going on a 7ft tall costume of an ogre titan from the computer game titanfall. But i would use the stuff for my minis as well.

For that kind of projects, I would think that matte car varnish sprays are cheaper :)

pot of windsor and newton ink in half a bucket of water, put it in a spray bottle and go to town. :)
