What genre it is?
« on: 13 April 2011, 01:18:17 AM »
I like tis type of VSF, but I dont know what genre it is, because its not really VSF:

Uniforms and factions of 1871-1880
Giant Steam Landships and Aether travel to Mars and Venus, BUT
with Edwardian diesel contraptions, like WW1 tanks (with slow reloading guns, so cavalry can charge them with sticky bombs), Early 20 century cars and airplanes up to 1916

Its not pure VSF, but also not a Dieselpunk, and not Pulp. Its like diesel engine in VSF era, but steam are stull used for big ships (maybe diesel fuel are moe expensive in this world to build HUGE ships with diesel engines)

Well "Pulp" kinda started in the 1890s...were military uniforms that different between the 1880s and 90s?

That would be ESF - Edwardian Science Fiction   ;)

That'd do though, anything so long as it ain't another bloody "-punk" name.

 lol lol

The setting sounds enough like VSF not to worry about trying to pin it down to something more specific. Just have the tanks powered by some other more Victorian-friendly power source. Cars and fixed-wing planes are easily included in VSF - just say they are powered by a new hyper-efficient mini steam engine or whatever.

As far as I'm concerned "VSF" is just a label that lets me include aliens, magic, dinosaurs, horror, time travel or any other silliness I fancy throwing into the mix :D
