In the Heart of Africa - Some questions
« on: May 06, 2011, 09:00:22 PM »
Hi,

I've got ITHOA 2nd edition. Have been reading through it and have a few questions, so I'm hoping that experts here might have some answers! I've looked around and so far have not found a FAQ or errata at all.

1/ p14, Baggage. How far does baggage move? The rules say they "move as a normal unit", but they are not on the Figure characteristics table on p15, and units have different move speeds depending on type.

2/ What happens if a figure is granted multiple saves? e.g. a White Man (SR 4+) inside a building (SR 3+). I'm assuming that they get the better of the saves rather than multiple chances to save.

3/ p21, Shooting. If shooting at Pygmies in cover do you get -2 to hit them? (-1 because they began/ended their turn in cover, and -1 because they are Pygmies in cover at end of turn). I think so...

4/ Close Combat/Shooting - once close combat goes into a second round, I can't actually see anything that says that those involved can't shoot as well as fight in close combat. p22 says you can't reload while in close combat, which is sensible. It seems to me that if involved in Close Combat you don't shoot in the shooting phase.

5/ p24, Morale. If a unit is ambushed by Pygmies it has to make 2 morale tests(?)

6/ Given that Leaders, Artillery and Gunboats may always fire at any target, do Leaders and/or individual figures get picked off very quickly, or is it a matter of keeping your leaders out of the way/out of line of sight etc?

thanks,

Mark

I will respond as I have played it, though I know some Colonial Groups have answered this for themselves as well.

1) I have baggage carriers move at the same pace as Askari d6+3/d6-1

2) White Men get multiple chances to save (hence the limit on them). But remember, once a White Man has lost his save, they all lose it.

3) Yes. -2

4) If in close combat (ie. the second or later rounds of it) you do not shoot in the shooting phase.

5) Pygmies are great at scaring the bejeezus out of you.  :)

6) You keep them out of line of sight.

And I have played with artillery several times now. I have to say, it is not as easy to use as you would think. Hitting the damn target can be annoying.

6) leaders tend to survive a bit longer because of their 3 attendants as extra lives. You certainly have to be careful with them though.

Ok, seems good.

So if they get multiple saves, do they only have to make one to survive? But if they fail one then all whitemen lose theirs? Hm, hadn't thought of it that way.

Ok, great stuff, thanks for the quick answers!

Ok. So if hit by Artillery the attendants can be hit on 6s as per normal artillery. Then you can use a remaining attendant to soak the artillery hit on the leader (since you don't get a save vs artillery). Hm, nasty.

Great - thanks!

Ah, I see what you mean - I don't mean saves on successive rounds, I mean multiple saves at the same time, e.g. White Man hit in a building gets 2 saves

Just to come back to this one - I recently found my copies of WI that have the In the Heart of Africa rules in them (#147-#149, Dec 1999 - Feb 2000).

In there under the Baggage section, it says that they move at 1d6 inches, or 1d6-2 inches if in cover, as if they were units as part of the normal sequence - either separately or all together, counting as a single unit for this purpose.

I assume that this was missed out of the printed rules by accident as otherwise the rules seem to be the same. The summary table in these rules doesn't have Baggage on it either, so the table was probably copied and then the relevant move text missed out.
