Suggestions for artillery?
« on: 14 August 2011, 08:15:06 AM »
I need to add some basic artillery to my Norwegians.  Any suggestions?  I mean, Reviresco has the obvious stuff for my 'nefs, but what about just a carriage based cannon? What are my best bets for good looking and appropriate to a 'we steal it from the smoking corpses of the British and Prussian forces' sort of group?

Reading only the subject line, my initial thought was "Point Towards Enemy"  ;D

No concrete suggestion on figures, but it does strike me that you ought to be looking for Krupp guns.  It seems like Krupp were selling to everybody and his dog n the late 19th/early 20th century.  I don't doubt they wouldn't baulk at selling to some upstart space vikings.

I like these homemade guns - bought from a vendor at a convention flea market:

All taken from the Sky Galleons of Mars Rulebook apparently.

Hmm. Well maybe I should look into scratch building some.  I don't care for scratchbuilding at that scale though - too small for my meat hooks.

I am stealing the GW use though - I never could justify it in my Pirate Empire army, so I am stealing that idea.  Where would a guy get Krupp guns without crew? Does anyone carry them?

I like the Perry British 6 pounder. I've got a bunch of Houston's guns lying around. I'll take a poke through those and see if there might be something useful there.

The Askari models look good - good reviews online as well.  I just may have to do that.

And if you find anything you're not using, Skrappie ol' boy, just let me know. Maybe I can find something you can use to trade for them.

Redoubt do one in their Sudan range.  Outpost Wargames Services have one in their Russo Turkish War range.  I don't have either so I can't comment on the quality.  I got mine from Irregular Miniatures, from the WWI range, with crew, but that was mainly a financial decision.

Old Glory sell Krupp guns without crew as do Foundry.
You get two in a pack from OG and they are quite decent guns. Foundry list in their FPW range and they are lovelly, but more expensive.

Well, as a follow up to my question - I bought some guns from Askari.  The pair of French 80mm mountain guns, the italian 75mm mountain guns, and a single field Krupp gun.

The positive - these models are exquisite. Well sculpted, very little flash or mould line, easy assembly.  Bloody beautiful.

And the service was prompt at a good price.  Kudos to the owner - he got these out in the next business day.

The negative - I didn't realize these were true 25mm models.  These cannon look like teeny little guns next to my 28mm figures. Will it stop me from using them? Oh, heck no.  Does it look a bit odd that some of my figures are carrying rifles with a larger bore than the cannon. Unfortunately, yes.

The Askari stuff is 28mm not 25mm, just like their figures.  Those mountain guns really were that small in comparison.

Seriously?  I definitely did not get that feeling when I looked at old photos - maybe I'll have to go look again.
