Vehicles in 28mm SF Games?
« on: 02 October 2011, 11:06:20 PM »
All,
I raised this as a reply to another post, but I guess it needs a separate post.  There are loads of beautiful vehicles being done for 28mm SF games these days.  But what rules are they being used for?  Are they just table dressing?  The two sets of rules that I mostly use, Two Hour Wargames "5150", and Alternative Armies "Firefight 2.0" are primarily infantry focused games, though 5150 does allow for some vehicles to be used.
So what are you guys using all these gorgeous vehicles for??

For 28mm skirmish on a 4' x 4' area, light vehicles like bikes, recon walkers, jeeps weigh in but big vehicles are table dressing.

That didn't stop me from ordering two APCs from Antenociti recently though.

The Antenociti stuff is exactly what got me thinking about this.

If you want to use vehicles I'd try a different ruleset - Fubar is good, as is Forge of War. Never tried 5150 with vehicles as played the game once, didn't like it, nor the mechanisms nor the poor layout of the rules which made it more complicated so cannot offer advice on that one. Never played firefight.

FUBAR is my current favorite for 28mm SF skirmish.  We don't line up tanks from edge to edge, but 1-3 vehicles and a similar number of squads per side can work very well with those rules.  The basic rules are simple, but designed to give players the option of adding house rules, or using variant rules to get the type of game and level of detail they prefer.

I tend to be a house rule writer and rules tinkerer, so FUBAR is the type of rules I like.

I mostly use Savage Worlds. I'll admit the times I've used vehicles they were set dressing or entrance points on the map. There are simple yet elegant rules to handle vehicle combat in the game. I just haven't had the need for them yet.

Transport vehicles are the most commonly used in our games, a way to get units on and off the table during the game.

As with Dentatus, jeep type vehicles get some actual combat as a fire support platform that can be redeployed quickly.

Also to give all those anti-tank weapon armed people/aliens something to do.
