Warband for Song of Blades and Heroes...

I'm forming a warband themed around Victrix's Greek Hoplites, any advice from someone familiar with the rules would be greatly appreciated. I want a heroic leader, stalwart 2IC, couple of Veterans, a few warriors a couple armed with javelins. I'm contemplating using the bloke with the trumpet thingy as a spell caster. Wot's the best way to spend mi' 300 points?

A mix of troops is a good way to go.

In the fairly few games we've had the different troops seem fairly balanced, once you realise what they are good for. Human troops are middle of the road stat wise, missile troops are fairly weak, but have a softening up role. A caster can be useful to pin enemy troops, to make them easier to kill.

From what I've been reading my plan to have a leader/great warrior/hero as the main man. A great warrior/hero as his second in command, with three elite guardsmen then a bunch of good men-at-arms... might not produce the most balanced game. Would I be better toning them down a bit quality wise, bearing in mind my first games, till I get the hang of it will be humans v humans?
