Plastic zombies
« on: 28 September 2012, 05:06:15 PM »
Hi!

Me and a couple of friends or thinking about getting into zombies through 2013 and I'm just wondering how many plastic kits are available yet? Are the wargames factory ones the only ones on the horizon or are there any others?

Cheers and sorry for the thoroughly uninteresting subject.

I think Studio Miniatures will be releasing a plastic zombie set soon, they had a kickstarter or indiegogo campaign to raise funds. The Wargames Factory Vixens are nice but I heard the opposite of their male counterpart which is an older kit. You also have the Mantic Games Ghouls and Zombies which are quite nice but are only clothed in raggs.

Have a look at the Zombie manufacturers thread as some of the metals out there are not much more expensive than the plastics. Some are but you get a better product.

The studio ones look the best bet although you get limited poses. My suggestion would be to mix and match with metals. Bulk out the horde with the plastics.

Not much more to add except that I have both the Wargames Factory Zombies and Zombie Vixens and the Vixens are slightly taller than their male counterparts. The male figures need a bit of work to get them presentable and if you have some spare heads they'll come in very handy for headswaps (possibly with Perry plastics?).

So many projects..... so little time.......

The Studio Miniatures plastic set looks good, but has very limited poses and heads.

If they turn out to be compatible size wise, I think it would take very little work to use the Mantic Games Zombie or Ghoul heads with the Studio minis.

If you like the Mantic Zombies, you can mix them with the plastic Celtic Warriors from Warlord Games.
http://www.warlordgames.com/us-store/hail-caesar/gallic-celts/ancient-celts-warriors.html (They used to have much better pics.)
The head to neck connection is the same and so is the torso to leg connection.  Some of the Celt legs have scabbards, but they are easy to clip off and file.  The very basic clothing can become sweatshirts, sports jerseys, sweatpants, etc.  I'm even going to try using the chain mail torsos as sweaters.  The weave will be kind of large, but I don't think it will look too bad in a horde.  Many of the wild looking Celtic heads will work great for zombies as well.

Edit:
I almost forgot, Studio Miniatures do a set of plastic WWII German Zombies.  Leave out the helmeted & cap heads and they could be used for hunters and survivalists that have become zombies.

Does anyone have any idea of how well the WF and Studio Miniatures stuff will scale up? Would there be a possibility of mixing the parts together to create more variation?

Uuuh!

I quite like the studio ones. Especially because of the limited amount of parts that needs to be glued and so on. Good!

The Studio Miniatures Zombies haven't been released yet (unless you're refering to the German zombies).  I do know that they don't have seperate torsos and legs.  The only thing that might be interchangable would be heads and left arms (WF don't have seperate right arms).  We'll just have to wait to see.

While not great, there are some decent parts in the WF set, so I consider them worth getting even if not interchangable.  If you're willing to put the work into them, you can get quite a lot out of them and if not, they're just zombies  lol.

The wargames factory go along with the principle "you get what you pay for"; You get quite a number of zombies for your money but they obviously aren't as good a most metal ones. I think they still looked decent and were easy to paint. Certainly a good choice if all you want is a big horde.

I got a mailing from Wayland Games the other day. Amongst the stuff they were advertising was a modern zombie trooper set, using Mantic Zombies and some of their Corporation troopers. There was a saving buying both together, but nothing to stop you buying a set of each and mixing and matching yourself.

Some of the guns may be a bit too modern, but they're a fairly sensible design, so we're not talking zombies with bolters here ::)

I would offer a counter point. While I agree that the Wargames Factory male zombies are a big pile of cack, the female ones- Zombie Vixens are not too bad. Here's one I painted for my blog

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

In fairness- if you want plastic male zombies then I would recommend you wait for Studio Miniatures to bring theirs out.

Alternatively you could always convert the Games Workshop ones into modern- My sculpting skills are weak, but I managed these...

Mind you, GW Plastics are so expensive I think you could probably buy metals ones for less else where. Studio Miniatures are the best and cheapest modern metal zeds I have found.

Depending on what you're going for, I suggest mixing too.  I've mixed Mantic's with WGF sets (celts, shock troopers), the huge bag of sci-fiers from the Warzone line (80 minis for 30ish bucks), and even my plethora of SST MI's.
