The Secret War by MFW Curran
« on: 12 July 2012, 11:44:32 AM »
I read this last summer - my daughter was organizing/culling her books - I saw the cover, read the first chapter, claimed "Dad's rights" and nicked the book. ::)

I thought that I'd share with those of you who have stumbled in to Gothic Horror via EoTD

Edited Blurb ...
"For thousands of years a secret war has been fought .......innocent people are caught up in the conflict—men like Captain William Saxon and Lieutenant Kieran Harte, two great friends who have recently survived the horrors of the Battle of Waterloo. But now they face a greater struggle, against the daemonic forces of Count Ordrane ....... Their only allies are an old man, a fading secret organization in the Church, and an enigmatic warrior, who may hold the key not only to the friends’ fates, but to the fate of all mankind."

Ok, it's not the best book you will read in your lifetime as some of the writing is a little long winded, but as a first book it's not that shabby - it starts ok and then the author hits his stride and the pace picks up, it fades a little in the middle and then he gets his second wind. Overall it's a good read, BUT for the GH/EoTD gamer the added value of the book is in the back story  .....

Muskets - check,
Secret Organizations - check,
Vampires - check,
Evil Minion Horde - check,
Blood and Guts - check,
Stiff Upper Lip - check,

After reading this book, I picked up Book 2 "The Hoard of Mhorrer". You can read the first few chapters on Amazon.

There was talk of a Book 3, but there is no clear schedule of when Book 3 will surface, as the author has decided to re-write (and re-publish as an e-book) this book first.

If you want a great setting for running an EoTD game or three - start here  .... and @ £1.99 the e-book is a steal.

Set just after Waterloo? Proves that such games are not restricted to Victorian and later times, but can well be set in earlier 'Horse & Musket' periods, Napoleonic or, if you prefer Georgian fashion of justaucorps and tricornes to that of early 19th C., by the time of the 'Lace Wars'.
I dream someone will game 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies' in the 'Barry Lyndon' setting

http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=242736
http://www.drunkendragoonproductions.com/18thcentimagi-nation/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=81

For such period ('Lacepulp' games http://passageoflines.50.forumer.com/syw-pulp-t363901-28.html    http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=246332) commercial rules (Pike & shot & zombies, 'Gothic Horror' http://www.rogue-games.net/Games/Colonial-Gothic/
..) -and you can add pieces from 'Witchfinder General: Days of Revelation' http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=255257, 'Witch Hunter: The Invisible World', and maybe 'The savage world of Solomon Kane'-  already exist; as well as commercial games  - 'A touch of Evil' http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/35815/a-touch-of-evil-the-supernatural-game

and the better known Carnevale http://vesper-on.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=section&layout=blog&id=6&Itemid=12&lang=en but 'later' rules can easily be adapted, such as 'Chaos in Carpathia' or 'Strange Aeons' http://anatolisgameroom.blogspot.fr/search/label/Strange%20Aeons%2018th%20century and there is a cornucopia of miniatures.

As for comics, French Le Scorpion is quite inspirational for 'Lace Wars' swashbuckling

and of course 'Le Marquis' http://themarquisinferno.blogspot.fr/ for 'Lacepulp'
