Shelling of Bodrum Castle
« on: September 28, 2012, 02:53:57 PM »
I have just returned from holiday in Bodrum, Turkey. We visited the 15th century castle where there is a sign saying the castle was shelled by French Navy vessel DUPLEIX on 26th May 1915. Does anyone know anything about this - why was the DUPLEIX in the area, was it part of a strategy or a diversion? Was it part of the Gallipoli campaign? I have tried to find this myself, but without success. Any info gratefully received.

Misread the chart and were dismayed when the object in question turned out not to be a giant coffee percolator?

The French Dupleix and a British destroyer HMS Kennet patrolled in that area. They wanted to check the port of Bodrum as it was believed there was a port for submarines here. Two French launches approached the port and were fired upon from the shore (8 French dead and 19 missing) so they bombarded the town

hope this helps
