A Supersytem battle report
« on: October 23, 2012, 10:05:20 AM »
Here is a quick summary of the Supersystem story arc that Soapy and I are playing on Monday evenings at the moment which is loosely based on the Marvel Secret Wars story:
Soapy is in charge of the heroes (points in brackets) and I am running the opposition.  The background is that Nick Fury has compiled evidence that the new Prime Minister of Latveria has been sponsoring high tech terrorism/crime in the US but was refused permission to act by the President who wanted to find a diplomatic solution.  However, Fury believes that the reasons are more to do with the large quantity of US aid being given to Latveria and the President not wanting to be embarrassed or worse if it comes to light that US aid is being used to sponsor terrorism.
Nick Fury therefore decided to put together an off book black ops team to deal with the problem consisting of:

Nick Fury (85)
Quake (100)
Captain America (130)
Spider-Man (130)
Wolverine (115)
Black Widow (100)
DareDevil (100)
Luke Cage (100)

Week 1 was a warm up where we just played pairs of heroes against groups of two or three tech powered villains so that the heroes would have an awareness of the problem when approached by Fury to join the team.
Week 2 was the first big game to get to Latveria Nick Fury decided to infiltrate The Raft, in particular Thunderbolt Tower to access Swamp-Thing’s habitat to gain transportation to Latveria.  However, the following Thunderbolts were in residence in the tower at the time and Fury’s team would need to fight their way through:

Songbird (120)
Ghost (105)
Blizzard (85)
Speed Daemon (85)
Mach IV (110)
Mr Hyde (85)
Atlas (90)
Radioactive Man (115)
Juggernaught (110)

Soapy split he team into two as per the scenario instructions with Cap, DareDevil and Black Widow approaching from the west side of the tower and the remainder of the team entering from the east. Daredevil entered first and spotted Blizzard and attacked, but not very effectively and Blizzard was able to move away and entangle Daredevil. Captain America and Black Widow followed up but were unable to finish off Blizzard and with support arriving from Atlas and Speed Daemon the heroes did not have a good first turn on that side of the table.   Meanwhile rest of the team entered to be confronted by Radioactive Man and Mr Hyde and while the team to some extent bypassed the opposition in turn one they were surprisingly unable to inflict much damage on the Thunderbolts (Soapy’s dice were not good).

Turn two say Luke Cage go toe to toe with Radioactive Man in a fight that would last until the end of turn 5 while the rest of the team on that side focused on Mr Hyde....who proved surprisingly resilient, Songbird entered the area to support Mr Hyde, but was unable to achieve anything despite hurling a number of solid sound constructs at Wolverine.  On the West side Cap’s team were unable to do any significant damage to Atlas with the only upside being that DareDevil managed to escape the entangle.

During the next turn the fight continued with Radioactive Man, Mr Hyde and Wolverine all taking big damage, but neither team was able to capitalise and make any real headway.  Cap bypassed Altas and ran to the room adjoining Swamp-Thin Habitat but failed to break a door down, and paid the price for ignoring Mack IV as he was stuck by a number of rockets but kept his footing.  Speed Daemon also ran and attacked Cap but was caught on the way out and only saved due to poor rolling once more from Soapy!

Turn four was the big turning point with Mr Hyde going down to attacks from Spider-Man, Quake and Wolverine which let the heroes move on toward the Swamp-Thing habitat. Atlas was knocked over by Black Widows sneaky defensive tactics leaving her free to start running the long way around to join the main part of the team, while Daredevil finished off Speed Daemon.

Turn 5   Luke Cage finally finished off Radioactive Man as Black Widow races past him towards the main body of the team.  Songbird manages to catch Fury Quake and Cap in an entangle, but Fury still manages to open the door to the habitat revealing the Juggeraught. Spider-Man charged in and managed to do some damage to the Juggernaught and although Spider-Man was struck in return he amazingly didn’t take any damage.

Final turns – Fury got his team through the doors and closed them  while his team managed to batter if not defeat Juggernaught  thanks to some good claw work from Wolverine, the Thunderbolts were unable to break down the door  and Fury’s team were able to use Swamp Thing to transport to Latveria.......and next week’s game.

In this story arc we are trying to get the power sets right for the characters rather than limiting to any specific point total, so heroes were designed first which I drafted and Soapy then made some changes to suit his tastes after than the opponents were finalised to match.   While I’m happy to play 85 point teams in match ups I prefer these story arc style games where it is easier to re-create favourite Marvel/DC characters.

I think you've hit on it here.  Story-driven games work very well when all the players buy-in and are willing to accept some inequities for the sake of telling a ripping yarn on the tabletop.  My only complaint is no pics!  Thanks!

We'll try and get pictures of the next part III, all the figures are painted by Soapy and Fairoaks so the figures all look pretty good, but it may be a couple of weeks as next Monday we're having our first game of Dungeon Delve!
