Hi,

Can any one suggest a good modern general history of the Second World War in the African and the greater Middle East?

I am after something that talks about campaigns in East Africa, Syria and Iraq without treating them as a complete side show to the Western desert, to be dealt with in just a couple of pages.

Regards

Jim

Not quite fitting all that you want is England's Last War Against France by Colin Smith, which covers British and Free French campaigns against Vichy, so Syria/Lebanon and Madagascar form a large portion of the book, as do the preparation for the Torch Landings. It's one of the best history books I've ever read in its structure and readability.

There was also a book about Orde Wingate which covered Gideon Force in Ethiopia to quite an extent, but I forget what it was called, sorry.
