Non 28mm Kickstarters?
« on: October 29, 2013, 10:33:14 PM »
I've just read 'The Walls of Byzantium' which of course lead me on to looking for figures for South-Eastern Europe for circa 1396 and the subsequent discovery that there are very few. This got me to wondering whether a decent 15mm range might ever be made, which brings me to the actual point of this post;

I don't think I've seen a kickstarter which covers scales other than 28mm. I know also that it seems generally to be that fantasy or not-strictly-historical kickstarters do better than those for historical ranges. Personally, I'd like to see a KS for Late C14th Medieval, since the only real options seem to be HYW figures who don't really work for Italy/South East Europe.

Is there any obvious reason why KS seem to be dedicated to 28mm alone?

My guess is sculptor preference or the visually appealing selling aspect.

I think its to do with what's currently popular.

There are two Kickstarters on now both 28mm one is a Pulp culture Martian theme while the other is a western Cthulhu inspired theme.

One just started [SoB] and is over $460k raised while the other one [M.A] is also just over the $460k raised but with less then a third of the time left to go.

Why has one out done the other when both offer a deal that is on par with each other.
who really knows it just happens. some people will like one more then the other and pledge. It could be that Western theme is the New Black and Martians are an aquired taste.

How many people would there be willing to pledge towards 15mm Ancient/medieval type themes? not many if any. But I bet those that did pledge on such a project wouldn't hold back those gentlemen who play that era and scale do invest some amount of time and money into it.

I would love to see more Sci-fi and fantasy 15mm, as there isn't a lot out there, its either 6mm/28mm sci-fi or 28mm fantasy. [and maybe 10mm fantasy as well from Pendraken]

I have played 15mm a lot and I enjoy the scale more so then 28mm. All of my WWII armies are in 15mm [Battlegroup Kursk]

Other option if your wanting to get stuff made might be through Eureka in Australia and their 300 club it has been successful and they have made items that normally wouldn't have been made other wise.

I will continue surfing through Kickstarter in the hope one day I will see more non-28mm scale projects.

LGW

Wasn't the War of the Worlds style thingy from Alien Dungeon 15mm? I'm sure there've been others too? ???
Some larger scale ones too.

Yep. It was different. I think it still did really well though.

yup that was 15mm WWWI setting. [Weird World War 1] yup it was a pretty good ride.

I got into that but I am wanting more sci-fi then that.

But as for older more historical there hasn't been much on there and if it has I think you would find it either as a board game or card game.

I realize I am in the smaller section of miniatures gaming  ::)   lol  in that I am drifting towards 3 mm for mass battles and retirement space concerns is driving me from 25+ mm skirmish, small battle games to "TBD" but my impression is that the offerings are providing what is "currently Kewl" (which is not a bad thing, just market driven,)  :-I  Fantasy/Science Fiction/VSF because it can sell well  o_o  and what is not available for historical gaming (sometimes called niche miniatures) in part because these may be what the sculptors are interested in.

I would like to see more 15 mm stuff to replace my 25+ mm figures but how (for example) niche is 1700's Soldados?  Way niche!  lol

When the demand is there the KS scene will reflect it I am sure.

Gracias,

Glenn
