Pulp Alley "Storytelling Reward" Idea
« on: 11 January 2014, 07:14:06 AM »
A friend and I just finished our first game of Pulp Alley . . . and I used my "microphone" idea (passing a "mic" back and forth as initiative changed hands) to help facilitate not only keeping track of the initiative but also to facilitate "telling the story". Here is a photo of me doing so:

Anyway my friend David had an idea about it . . . particularly in multi-player games, why not reward the best "storytelling" (by consensus of the players). My idea was that they would get their choice of one point of Tip, Contact, Gear or Backup. We both thought that this would enhance creativity on the part of the participants.

Oh, and for those curious about the "mic" in the photo . . . it is made from a candlestick (and I still don't have the shape that I want), with an old-fashioned clothespin (wrapped with a bit around it to hold it firmly in the candlestick) with cardboard stuck in the clothespin and more cardboard taped around it to give it the rough shape of an old-time radio mic, then painted a charcoal color.  It is far from perfect but it works.

Anyway, you might want to try the "storytelling reward" idea in your own games.

What a great idea. You need to get an echo and a crackle into the sound somehow but I like your style!

Something like this would be fun!

Yes, that's a marvelous-looking one.

Sadly I do not have the budget to buy one like that . . . nor the skill to make one, alas . . . but that would surely be a beauty to use.

Great idea, Jeff! My friends and I discussed getting a pulpy hat like a fez or pith helmet to denote who has the initiative. I like your storytelling award as it also take some pressure off the GM...

Nice idea.

We ussually come up with lots of ABSURD situations in our games, and have lots of fun making noises, playing the part of the extras, and figuring out what all those "Perils" are.

But ACTUALLY GIVING a reward to someone who is really inventive I think will be a nice addition to our games.

thanks for sharing.
I know you're too old to play with toy soldiers. So give them to me... NOW!

Looks like great fun! We used to do something like a "storytelling award" in our old RPG games. Just like your cool microphone idea, I think its a fun way to encourage players to join in the spirit of Pulp gaming.  :D
