German uniform Battle of the Bulge question
« on: 23 October 2014, 10:18:26 PM »
Hi,

I'd like to know which kinds of uniform(s) the Germans used during the Battle of the Bulge! I've seen different things and I want to mix in some camo trousers/jackets to break up the uniformity of the white camo. I've seen Thib-O and Tom Weiss using a fall/winter peadot pattern on some parts of their minis.

Thank you in adavance!

Best regards,

Marc

SS smocks (fall side out) worn over tunics or greatcoats. Pea pattern jackets and pants worn over tunics and feldgrau wool pants. Helmet covers, fall side out. Not sure if the Italian cammo pattern stuff was still available. It may have been all used up in Normandy.

I think oakleaf and peadot were more used by the SS, though there was definetely a mixture. Italian patterns would have been also.

Splinter pattern would have been in use by Heer personnel also.

I doubt that Heer personnel would wear any cammo clothing, aside from the standard issue 2-piece winter padded suit.

Although not widespread there was a lot of use of camo smocks by Heer personnel particularly Panzer Grenadiers. Failing that there was the Zeltbahn which was often worn as camouflage. Heer smocks would have been marsh pattern rather than splinter at that time.

Interesting photo, I get the impression there is a young lady across the street who forgets to draw the curtains before undressing  :)

Bear in mind that the specially tailored cammo tunic would likely only be made for officers and perhaps senior NCO's in the Heer. Some afv crews might also have suits made up for them.

The ordinary Heer Landser in an infantry or arty unit was very unlikely to have his own custom made cammo suit.

I can't add anything to the information that others have supplied but you might find inspiration in Agis's painting here.

I hope he does not mind me linking to his work :) http://www.adpublishing.de/html/late_war_germans.html
