If it's any consolation, you are not alone. To quote Johnny Nash "There are more questions than answers... the more I find out the less I know". 

The Portuguese supported the Nationalists after a fashion and somewhat under the table. IIRC they supplied a battalion of 'volunteers'.

Btw, you missed out the Catalans (Rep. autonomous community) and the Kingdom of Morocco (Nationalist ally).

The Osprey essential history is a great simple introduction. Anthony Beevor's 'The Battle for Spain' is the more or less definitive recent history in English. Very thorough. Very gripping. Very well written. Fully explains all the many and various factions.

The osprey I have both books. I need to read Anthony Beevor's 'The Battle for Spain' still.
