Gloire for Samurai?
« on: September 27, 2006, 11:00:33 AM »
I need skirmish rules for small samurai games, w/ just a few models fer side, and no historical accuracy is necessary!  Would Gloire fit the bill, w/ some adjustment?

If not, what would? I'm dying to buy some Perry unarmoured Samurai, and I'd like them to get in a scrap or 2, but there is no way I'm doing a full-fledged army.

The short answer: with some work, yes it would.

The long answer: there are plans that if Gloire does well we will cover other eras and locations with the Gloire rules, though you could probably modify them for samurai now. I think some of the samurai flavor will be missing unless you modify the rules since I don't think fighting styles were exactly the same.

You can also give Dice for Honor a try if you want some slightly larger scale rules to try. And the best part is they're free. Just head over to:

Rich is right--fighting styles differ enough in Japan that you'd have to make at least some adaptations to Gloire in order to get the feel right. The elements are there for the kind of skirmish you want.

Rich doesn't know this, but some of the close combat ideas for Gloire came from notes for samurai rules I wrote years ago, but never developed completely. So using Gloire to play a samurai game would, quite unintentionally, bring those rules back to their origin!

You should meditate upon this while carving wooden bhodisatvas or painting your Perry figures. Only then will you achieve the right state of "floating mindfulness" to be a samurai gamer.  :)

But not enough, I fear.  There needs to be a tighter regime in the torture zone, perhaps a comfy chair could be installed?

I usually announce to the office that the knoutings will continue until morale improves.

Well, Pete found an excuse not to be stuck in a car with me for two hours, so I'll have to find some other way to torture him.  :D

And we're just over a month away from the release of Broadsword Adventures. Our playtesters have done a marvelous job of helping fine-tune the rules. BA is much more close combat oriented than even Gloire. Adapting it to any genre where you want to make close combat the priority will be fairly easy.

Or, why not try "Kashindan" - an excellent set of skirmish rules by fellow LAFer, Lupus.

Only $10.00 to buy the PDF for loads of Oriental fun, so I'm sure you could also afford to buy the Gloire PDF for  your Occidental fun  lol
