Brink of Battle question for Faust !
« on: April 05, 2014, 05:02:41 AM »
Hey, if you are around, quick question...

If I have a model that does not have the fight with two weapons trait... but he does have two weapons, let's say a viking that has his spear and a trusty sword if needed...

can he switch weapons in combat... let's say he charges with the spear so as not to be at risk but if he gets stuck in hand to hand he'll drop his spear and switch to his sword to use his riposte ?

Also, javelins last for the whole battle, but what about spears... if I do throw it then I assume it is gone.. correct ?

Thanks.. getting ready for a Sunday game, we need to practice the rules in preparation for epic heroes...

I don't know this ruleset, but I think there's a serious difference in ambidexterity or mixed-handedness and just carrying 2 weapons. The character you're describing will fight with his strong hand, wether it is with the spear or the sword, so to change from spear to sword he'd have to drop the spear and change hands with the sword, which IMO would give his opponent a window of opportunity.

As for javelins : javelineers carried several of those (although not an unlimited amount) while a spearman carries only 1 spear, so once he throws it, it's gone unless he can recuperate it and even then if it's not broken (Roman pilai were constructed to bend upon impact so the enemy could not throw them back or pull them out of a shield)
Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons,
for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.

That is exactly my reasoning, I'm just looking to see if this is the way the author sees it working in his rules or if he has an alternative interpretation.

BoB has this very cool concepts for hand to hand... during the initial combat round the figthr with the weapon with longest reach has the advantage that he will not expose himself to a counter attack but while the two models become engaged this advantage goes away... The spear has long reach making it a good weapon for the charge an initial attack....
As soon as reach is no longer a factor the viking might well decide to transition to his trusty sword since the rules also account that the standard double edged sword provides additional advantages in defense since it is good for executing parry riposte... Hence my question if it would take an activation to switch weapons ( thus providing the opportunity you mentioned ).

Brink of Battle really shines for this one on one hand combat ...

Hi Francisco,

I'm waiting for AT&T to fix our wireless outage in my area, so I can't post the clarification of this rule as it will appear in our Epic Heroes supplement. But, here is some clarification for you that might help.

You may equip a model with different weapons and decide how to use them between actions. Thrown weapons are assumed to be either recovered between actions or have enough on hand to use through the game. We don't count bullets or biscuits in BoB so it is assumed that your thrown spear is usable each action.

Here's some clarification for you regarding weapon swaps:

Whenever a model declares a Ranged or Close combat Action, or has one declared against him, he can announce that he is using a different arrangement of Weapons or Shields available to him as equipped, before making any Attack/Defense Checks.

Before rolling the dice, the Attacker's Controlling Player states which Weapons and Shield, if any, he is using for the Attack. That Player then asks the Defending model's Controlling Player what Weapons or Shield it is using while making the Defense Check.

Hope that clears things up for you Francisco! :)

We had our U-verse fixed today. How did you do with the clarifications Francisco?
