What Happened to Oathsworns fantasy miniatures?
« on: September 15, 2017, 03:44:37 PM »
Oathsworn used to make tons of classical fantasy minis (Dwarfs/Elves etc) that they got funding for through kickstarter. Now on their website all their selling is Female Minis and a 'Talking Animal Fantasy' range. What happened ?

I think you are thinking of Otherworld Fantasy and mixing it up with Oathsworn.

Edit: Or I guess they made some dwarves they're not stocking any more. Maybe they didn't sell?

I had a similar post on here and what I found out was that the man who sculpted or commissioned them took back the rights. It was to bad as there were some interesting figures.
I stand corrected

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it anymore and what is it seems weird and scary.

I messaged them on FB after posting this and they say the moulds wore out.

No elves (they're evil!), but we did have dwarves and halflings, and a couple of monsters... and yep, they need new moulds. We don't have all the masters though unfortunately, and in any case look at some of the early ones and think 'I could do that much better now!' so, really, I'd rather start again.

It's on my to-do list, but that's a long list and I've only got so much time. I'll get there eventually! But for the last year I've been working on nothing but Burrows & Badgers, with the Osprey published book coming out at Salute next year. And right now, I'm sculpting Norse gods, some RPG characters and playtesting our Dark 7 scifi game. But once that lots done, back to fantasy! Probably, anyway...  :D

Here's a pic of one of the god models - Odin the Wanderer:

cheers,
Michael

That's a great-looking Odin! A good reminder, too, that Tolkien's conception of Gandalf was based on a picture of the wandering Odin (if I remember my Tom Shippey correctly ...).

Yep - Tolkien complained about the original art for Gandalf, and said he should look like an 'Odinic wanderer'.

Yes, an excellent Odin indeed!

The origins-of-Gandalf thing is a bit confused, actually; there is a picture, according to Humphrey Carpenter a postcard reproduction of Josef Madlener's Der Berggeist, which Tolkien labelled "origin of Gandalf". It's of a mountain spirit rather than Odin per se, though; he does have a broad brimmed (not pointed) hat, like many classical depictions of Odin, so Tolkien may have connected it with Odin on some level. And certainly the Lord of the Rings Gandalf is an "Odinic wanderer" without any doubt.

The odd thing, incidentally, is that Carpenter says Tolkien bought the postcard on his 1911 trip to Switzerland; but the artist's daughter says it wasn't painted until the 1920s...presumably Carpenter or Tolkien got it wrong, or misremembered. But I think this has taken us to the wilder shores of Tolkien minutiae and so, with apologies for the digression, I'll end now...

Keen to see more Norse gods and RPG characters, for sure.

Ah, yes - that's the thing I was thinking of. Thanks!
