Solvent for PVA on Resin?
« on: 22 January 2015, 05:42:34 PM »
I have some scenery elements in resin. They have very large integral bases, so I added the usual PVA and sand to them. However, I now have a better option to trim down the integral bases. Unfortunately, doing so requires that I remove the PVA/sand coating. What's the best option here? Someone suggested boiling, but I'm not sure that's a good idea with resin?

Thanks!

I would think that just hot water might do the trick.  If it is normal flexible household PVA you might be able to just peal it off after soaking in water.

Yep, just plain old white glue.

Lukewarm to hot water with some detergent added did the trick for loosening old fashioned sawdust based flock on my old mini's. It should work for resin and sand as well, as long as you don't get the water hot enough to warp the resin.

Fram,Its pritty much the way I go about it.I use washing powder and leave it to soak,as long as its not water proof pva/wood glue. These tend to grab the pore's in the surface of the resin.
As for temp. Handwash warm.Any warping can be reversed with a little reheating and repositioning,
Any warping that didn't happen in the mould can be corrected. That said depending on how you intend on triming down the bases, leaving the pva on might be a blessing, then only remove the pva thats left after triming. It could reduce the risk of damage to the section you intend to keep.

Ah thanks.

I need to remove it, because there's a raised circle in the centre of the lipped base that I need to clean. A friend with a workshop has a vacuum clamp that can hold the objects so that we can shave down these obscenely large bases without clamping down on the fine detail bits, but that circle needs to be clean for this to work.
