Help needed - Greek gods
« on: 11 October 2008, 04:35:41 PM »
Cross-posted from the fantasy adventures board:

Help!

I'm putting together some terrain for an English landscaped garden and I need statues of Greek-style  gods, godesses and appropriate mythological creatures. Figure scale can be anywhere from 30mm to 40mm. Can anyone recommend suitable figures? Manufacturers with quick delivery would be especially useful.

I know Chiltern do some Greek gods but the sculpts look too chunky for the sort of statues I have in mind.

Reaper does a very nice medusa. Crocodile Games have a Spartan or two that might serve. I'm working on a fountain using Foundry's Britannia figure.

I can recommend "Nikolai miniatures" they have some busts and statues although they manufacture accessories for 1/72-20mm this is for all scales. I have seen them and they are very nice:
http://www.diorama-dreamland.at/nikolai/index.htm
or another retailer who sells Nikolai's excellent figures alongwith many other ranges:
http://www.fuhrmann-figuren.de/willkommen_bei_kf_1zu72.htm
Nikolai's models are resin.

Faller (the railway accessories and not only manufacturer) has a set oif busts etc with Schiller. I do not have the link but I think it is easy to be found. These are aimed for 1/87 but might work.

Foundry has a new pack with plinths, columns, amphoras and a statuette:

the next solution is to get a figure Greek God/Goddess loookalike , paint it as statue [for example Grimm has painted some Buddah with a perfect aged copper finish] and put it on a scratchbuilt plinth!

Which figures are suitable for this use? Start from Foundry ancients range or other historical and fantasy manufacturer.

Here is the link to the Greeks by Foundry:

I think you can find some useful figures here!
[Yes it will be a bit pricey to buy packs and use one or two figures only]

Hasslefree has a gorgeous Greek nude female with helmet...

I fell in love with this model immediately. In my Mutants and MAsterminds group, I painted her to be the one character's model - she was a super strong daughter of Artemis and Heracles (hey, it is a super campaign, we can have whoever we want do the whoopee), so the height difference of a 40mm to a 28 was a good way to show her size. She did buy growth, after all.

She was my first thought. Hasslefree also has a 28mm version of the same fig, and while not as exquisite, is pretty awesome.

Thanks for all the udeas guys. I will look out for the Foundry pack with the statues and pillars and also have a look at Historex agents.

Fortunately one of my partners in crime is producing an 18th century Greco-Roman style folly with a statue in it, so that will help to set the scene for our immediate uses. However, we want to take thie project further so willcertainly use some of the ideas suggested on this thread.

Ral Partha had some gods.  You could look for them either on the Ral Partha Europe site or Iron Wind Metals.

Reaper has a few figures that might well work.  There is at least one mermaid.  Look at their children of the zodiac for some female statuary.

Oh, RAFM (I think it's RAFM) has some sort of merman that might do for Neptune or Triton or Poseidon, whichever aspect he is to the Greeks.  They also have unicorns, a pegasus and a hippogriff that aren't too horrible, given they're oldish sculpts

Eureka does some satyrs, although I don't think any are playing the pipes.

If you can find anyone with old stock, look at Eastern Front Miniatures.  Neptune for certain.  Noble Knight Games may have a blister or two.  (Ah.  Check Paizo.com as they seem to have some.)

Check eBay for the old Grenadier boxed sets.  There's one set that is pretty much all the mythological beasties.  They aren't usually too expensive.

Reaper also has a nice centaur armed only with a bow.  Very Greek.
