Napoleonic British shako question
« on: 16 July 2015, 05:59:35 PM »
This is a question about the shako plates on stovepipe shakos.

Light companies of line battalions. Were shako plates the same as the rest of the battalion or did they feature bugles (like that of light infantry battalions) as a distinction?

Thanks in advance,

James

I think it varied with the regisments  - some illustrations seem to show the bugle horm others the standard shako plate

I believe that the light company of regular line battalions had the same shako badge as the centre and grenadier companies. I think it was only the Light infantry and rifle battalions that used the bugle horn. This may only apply to the stovepipe shako though, a quick look on another forum suggests the bugle horn may have appearred on light company shakos post the introduction of the belgic version in 1812.
