Dacian & Sarmatian Force
« on: 27 June 2015, 10:34:13 PM »
After years of silence, the planets aligned and an Ancients campaign has awoken at my gaming club.  Adding to the surprise is several other people have actually purchased armies thanks to all the new plastics available. This has caused me to bring my Dacian & Sarmatian boxed hordes out of storage.

I had a little time off work this week so I decided to build the Sarmatian forces first.  This is all but two of the horse units.

As the rain finally let up this morning, I brought out the airbrush and primed the forces:

I had hoped to get a bit further along with the force but I'm moving even slower than normal while recovering from breaking my finger last month.  I will try to finish a few units of this force then move on to a few Dacian units.
Painted:  2025:539; 2024: 410; 2023: 37; 2022: 56

There are certainly lots of them!  What range?

These are all Warlord.  If I add any more light horse I will pick up some of the 1st corps range MadMick is posting right now.

Looks like a Sarmatian army on its own!

Shame Warlord does not make enough 'proper' falxmen in their Dacian packs.   Their Dacian command figures are good - they need to add a Sarmatian senior command group as well.

I want to be able to field either force so I wanted a lot of horse.
Old Glory sells a unit of falxmen which I ordered but have not yet received.  Hopefully they are compatible in size.

The only problem with buying a lot of horse is you have to paint them.  o_o
Finished a few units, so I figured I would post some pictures.

I was thinking about leaving the front tab on the horse as a support but the more I stare at them the more I am thinking they need to go.

You could use tufts of grass to disguise them instead? Horses supported by only the back legs are a bit vulnerable.

Nicely done.  8-)

I'd also disguise the front support with something like Tamiya flowers or a tuft of grass...

True. Tufts would hide it fairly well.

Definitely will use the tufts on the horse bases going forward. Not sure why I didn't to start with considering how many I have.  Need better flowers though...

Some Sarmatian Horse I painted last month and finished basing now.

We have decided to leave the real metal, really sharp spears and pikes we have from Warlord and others unpainted as a warning to those who handle them. Some of our phalanxes literally were bloodied the last game.

Edit - I just realized I left off the shields on these horsemen.  I will have to dig those out of the mountain and get them painted.

The old glory archers and falxmen are a bit small in comparison to the Warlord 28mm but close enough for my use.  As I was posting these pictures I noticed a few figures within the stands seem to have frosted slightly. Considering I had not noticed this when using them in a battle it seems to have take a days to discolor.  I have never had that happen before.
