Trying my hand at some Ancients - Dacian Warlord added
« on: June 14, 2025, 09:49:22 PM »
My tastes in all things wargames is quite varied to say the least but recently I have been delving into historical miniatures more and more. I have been working on a Celtic ( Gallic? ) warband for Clash of Spears, with my ultimate aim for Celtic, Early Imperial Roman and Dacian armies.
My "go to" minis have been Victrix but currently they don't make mounted unarmoured Celts. They do some excellent nobles in mail ( which I have). I have some Warlord miniatures mounted Celts but unfortunately they look like belligerent Hobbits compared to Victrix. With that in mind I thought I would make my own.

They are Victrix Gallic nobles mashed together with Victrix unarmoured Gallic warriors.
The ones with the shirts were quite straight forward. I cut them off at the waist and filed down the chain "skirt" on the mounted legs and blended them together with green stuff.
The shirtless ones took more work and required cutting the legs off the horsemen and transplanting them onto the warriors using green stuff. It took a lot longer than I thought!!!
I'm pretty pleased how they have turned out. Hope you like them.

They came out very nicely  :-* I know that the main body of work was in the scalpel work and sculpting but I can't help loving the horses (especially the grey).
Got to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight.

Thank you for the comments. It is very much appreciated!
Continuing in a similar vein, I was looking at mounted models available for Dacians. I wanted a mounted warlord and some Sarmatian Cataphracts but couldn't find any I liked.
For the Dacian Warlord I decided on a simple mash up between a Victrix Dacian Noble and a Victrix Roman General. Swapped at the waist with a bit of green-stuff, I think it doesn't look too bad.

For the Sarmatians, I initially looked at converting some late Roman Cataphracts but I thought the arm and leg armour looked too late. I decided to go for a set of Gripping Beast Gothic Elite cavalry. I swapped out the original arms and used Victrix Viking arms swinging a two hand axe. I cut away the axe, drilled out the hands and added wire spears. They were a pain to position correctly and a couple of them have been repositioned at the waist but I think I'm pretty pleased with the result. The helmets may be a little late but I can live with that.

I will add some painted Celts soon.

Excellent. I forgot about the step nomads for cavalry legs. The issue I had with the Warlord horses were the molded on legs. They looked too short for the torsos. Good eye for parts mate, I may do similar for some unarmoured Sarmatian. Thanks for sharing.

I also found a more " noble " version at the back of my bookshelf.  Forgot I made him as the same time.    Promise I won't add  any more pics on your post :)

I'm slowly working through my Celts (although I have been side-tracked with painting the Sarmatians!!). Next up some Celtic Chariots and some command group mins.

Victrix Chariots, built "as is" with no conversion work.

I have replicated each rider on foot.

And finally some command, type minis. The central figure is Vercingetorix form Warlord games. I know he's not a British Celt but I liked the mini!!

I should have some Nobles up by next weekend.
