Resurrecting this rather than starting a new thread, a couple of new questions...

I'm sure I could find out with a little digging, but in case of a quick answer, anyone know how the Foundry Mexican Adventure figures stand up to Gringo's?

Also - any thoughts on whether the Artizan Chasseurs d'Afrique would work for the Mexican Adventure? I know the Artizan Foreign Legion range says 1890 onwards, but in a quest to find figures. Maybe with a bit of alteration, replace the headgear?

Ged - if you read this, any possible additions to the range in the pipeline?  Anything at all?

You could do worse than start with the Maximillian Adventure Osprey and the booklet produced by FreiKorps of the same name. Both should be available via Caliver and if nothing else will give you some piccies and a bibliography to delve into.

For rules I'd suggest Sharp Practice or LotOW Alamo with mods to suit your taste. I'm considering these to for big skirmish games in Italy for the same period. For larger scale battle try Neil Thomas's 19th Rules. (A smart chap will work out how to use his bases to utilise both scales of game!).

Other sets worth a gander at might be The Sword and The Flame or Triumph and Tragedy and those Victorian Steel rules seem interesting too,though I've not used them.

The Sword & the Flame are good rules for small scirmishes to medium size battles. There is even a suppliment for the Maximillian adventure.

René Chartrand's Osprey MAA on the Maximilian adventure is a decent primer on the subject. There's been a fairly comprehensive series of booklets published in France as well but you need to read French fluently as they're mostly text : I can tell you how to get hold of them if you are interested

Thanks all for the pointers, I'm gradually digging it up, still on the look out for a good solid history though. Anyone read 'The Crown of Mexico' by Joan Haslip? Out of print I think but seems to have good reviews.

The Osprey is out of print too - I thought the copy I saw at Colours on sale for £25 was expensive, but I've just seen a copy on sale for £145!

I purchased this book for my dad last year Maximilian and Juarez (Biography & Memoirs), he said it was quite good, got it on Amazon for less than £10, also got the osprey book on there but I cant see any for sale now,
