Played as written Planar Tear causes the amount of damage rolled to the Demon ignoring armour? A scroll would be interesting...

Damage as rolled so roll 18 do 18 damage.
I believe you could empower a low roll to both cast and/or increase the damage, so need a 12 roll a 10 empower by 5 gives 15 and that Major Demon is toast. It's one of the spells where lowering the cast number helps to cast but reduces the effect of the spell, like Mind Control and all the Will opposed spells.
I believe scrolls always 'go off' at the base casting number so 12 damage, just enough for a Minor Demon but not for that Major Demon.

Actually it does that if you don't know the spell. If you do know it then if you use the scroll to auto cast then it succeeds on whatever # you roll even a 1. So knowing the spell is a determent when using a scroll if it has a save or has an effect based on the casting #.

Agree on the "control" type spells on scrolls - tried Mind Control on a Thug last night - he has to beat 12 which isn't a particularly difficult roll - he does - scroll gone - no control and no xp - meh
