Battle Report - by land and sea
« on: 22 April 2016, 07:34:38 PM »
Games & Stuff in Glenn Burnie, Maryland (http://gamesandstuffonline.com/) had its 16th Anniversary last weekend and our Sea Dog Captain Patrick ran a multi-scenario game of DeepWars and ShadowSea. Below is a report of the first two scenarios. The underwater battles used the rules from DeepWars and the land battles used the rules from ShadowSea - Conquest of the Underground World.

The first scenario had Marie Du Chatelet and her band of Fortune Hunters exploring the seafloor of the Shallow Shelf, searching for outcroppings of ether crystals to recover to power their devices and a downed Iron Conqueror mech construct they had discovered on shore. They were met by a squad of Ancients of Atalán, who descended from above, intent on repelling these invaders of their watery realm. The battle was short and brutal, as the Armored Divers laid waste to the Atalán force with their spearguns, while packs of hungry sharks converged upon the wounded. The Fortune Hunters claimed the crystals and brought them back to a shipwreck on the beach.

The Second Scenario unfolded with Marie delivering the crystals to a Fortune Hunter warband on the shores of the Skeleton Coast, led by Captain Balthazar Drake and Dr. Isabella Johannes. They entered the rotting hulk of an ancient ship within a cavern on the beach, carefully avoiding the dangerous Anklebiter barnacles encrusting the hull. They found the old mech, silent and rusting in the ship, but as they worked on repairs with the new crystals a force of foul and twisted Dark Mariners emerged from the seas. The battle raged as Dr. Johannes frantically tried to repair the mech, and the blood in the water created a feeding frenzy around one of the Dark Mariners mutant spawn, the massive Leviathan. In the confusion, Dr. Johannes was able to activate the mech and lead it with her team to safety, barely escaping a hungry denizen of the coast, a one-eyed giant, that tried to make a meal of them.

The final scenario took the Fortune Hunter warband into the depths of the Sunless Forest, a forest of giant mushrooms and ruined structures. The Fortune Hunters, led by Captain Balthazar Drake and Dr. Isabella Johannes, were in search of their colleague, the esteemed Dr. Wormwood, who had been exploring the depths of the fungal forest in search of bio-mechanical devices used by the mysterious Clal-Chk. A troglodyte guide led the Fortune Hunters to his last location, where the team found him atop a steep cliff. They were met by a band of warriors and dark sorceresses of the Axibalán Empire, led by the legendary archer Chimalma, who were tracking Wormwood themselves, intent on capturing him to extract his secrets of ethereal technology, in ways too dire to imagine.

Wormwood was trapped on the cliff but was able to leap across the tops of the giant mushrooms using his ether-powered legs, deftly avoiding the spells and arrows fired at him. When Wormwood finally reached solid ground, the enemy forces had converged near a dark bubbling cistern, splashing through it as they battled. One of the sorceresses,Xuihcoatl, cast a spell of Psychic Magic to control the mind of the Mad Bomber fighting alongside Captain Drake. The poor weak-willed bomber became a slave to Xuihcoatl's will, lobbing grenades at his allies. Seeing this, Wormwood and Dr. Johannes made their escape as Captain Drake desperately tried to guard their retreat, only to be blown to bits by the enslaved bomber. The victory was won by the Fortune Hunters, but the cost was high and their next adventure would have to be done without their captain.

Have you noticed that the action invariably occurs where two or more boards (maps in the real thing) meet? That aside, any game played on such BEAUTIFUL terrain has to be a memorable event. Both boards are GORGEOUS, AND GLORIOUSLY colorful...I LOVE the Mushrooms. FANTASTICALLY WELL DONE!
