Matakishi and "The natives are restless" in the Congo"
« on: 09 January 2014, 08:08:13 AM »
Matakishi wrote a set of rules called "The Natives are Restless Tonight". The rules simulate the archetypal colonial scenario; where a regular colonial force is besieged by hordes of natives. Ammunition is running low, and the regulars hope they can hold out till relief arrives. I really wanted to give these a go.

I decided to set this in the Eastern Congo in the late nineteenth century ('cause I have the figures see). So on one side were 5 companies of Force Publique soldiers with a field gun.

On the other side were hordes of natives armed with spears or 'trade muskets'; bolstered by limited numbers of Arabs with muskets, or fanatic Arabs with swords.

"The Natives are Restless Tonight" does not cater for the standard "can't shoot-can't fight" African native; so these were represented as shooting and close combat with one dice for every two figures (round up).

The Force Publique are holed up in Fort Désespoir which has partly fallen down; they need to hold on till a relieving column arrives (on the second turn of the ace of spades). They have enough ammunition for 20 volleys and 5 rounds of canister for the field gun. Will it be enough?

Dandy terrain.

Like your figures. Thanks for the peep.

For my small 'colonial' actions I use a 'melee' or skirmish modification of my Wild West rules once produced by a large games company now OOP.

Must check out the TNART.

Hi Mac,

fantastic stuff! :-*

I'm a big fan of your blog and as well of your miniature collection and painting style

Your blog is a real treasure of inspiration. It's great to know that you are also a member of LAF (wasn't aware of it).

Cheers

Lovely report. You have a great collection of buildings and miniatures.
I'm very happy you seemed to enjoy the rules too :)

Great, and shows that you can have a great stand up fight with only a few figures.

Wow... I wonder how I missed that! It is great. I know [I have played] Matakishi's game for Boxer Rebelion. But this is very nice, wonderfully looking  indeed ;)

Super! :D

It shows that great games can be played with relatively few figures.

Brilliant!

Okay, did you track down and kill and skin the Nauga personally or did you have someone do it for you?   lol

I really liked your buildings and set up.
What did you mean by this exactly?

"The Natives are Restless Tonight" does not cater for the standard "can't shoot-can't fight" African native; so these were represented as shooting and close combat with one dice for every two figures (round up)"

Do you mean that is a flaw in the rules or that it compares well to other rules regarding natives?

Hi Mac - I feel I might have seen you somewhere before.  Either that, or we might be related!
