Never heard about this....furthermore, in 1865 Poland and Lithuania were part of Russia. Could it have been exiles form the 1863 polish uprising ?

I'm dubious about this. As far as I know the Germans were the first to have a colonial presence in Togo, other than Portuguese trading (by which they no doubt mean "slaving") posts on the coast. Never heard of the Spanish being there, let alone the place being colonized by a country that had ceased to exist in the previous century.

Would be fascinating if it were true though. Would love to hear more about this.

The only Polish colonies I've heard about were established two centuries earlier - one in Africa:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kunta_Kinteh_Island

and the other one in America:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tobago

Both of those colonies were run by Jacob Kettler -vassal of polish crown.

Maybe someone mixed the facts in that article, making Togoland from Tobago

Wiki has a bit about an 1882 private Polish venture in Cameroon.

As mentioned above there was not Polsih or Lithuanian state in the 1860s.

Courland, which was a vassal of Poland-Lithuania tried to set up a colony on Toco, which is in the Carribean that was later surrendered to the Spanish.

So, my guess is that the year got somehow mixed up (e.g 1658 intead of 1865) and the spelling of Toco, too, making it look like Togo in Wesrt Africa.
