Conan Project: Looking for 28mm Minis
« on: June 07, 2017, 04:24:21 PM »
Hi All,

I'm considering moving ahead on a Conan skirmish project and am hoping to get some help regarding appropriate figures. Now, my knowledge of Hyboria is pretty pathetic - I've read quite a few of REH's short stories and that's about it - I'm rusty on the Ahnuld films (must work on that!) and don't really go for comic books - so all help would be appreciated. Here's what I've got so far:

I've got the "Northern Barbarian" type pretty well covered, I think: I've done up several Bronze Age Conans and other shaggy fellows; I've also got some by Red Box; I've even got the old Citadel Thrud for an added mighty protagonist or antagonist. I've spent a good deal of time looking over Matakishi's take on the subject, which has been hugely inspirational. I have some sorcerers, including the rather splendid bald, sacrificing chap from Bronze Age, as well as some demons, snakes and scorpions. So far so good. Here is where I could use some help.

1.) Khitai: I know this was basically a stand-in for China. Are there any good, slightly sinister Chinese sculpts out there? I know those by Pulp Figures (many of which have guns, of course), but other leads would be much appreciated. I'd also love to find some Oriental style demons and monsters. Those by Dixon (which of course are Japanese, but why quibble?) might work.

2.) Stygia: probably my favourite setting. Would New Kingdom Egyptians work for average warriors? I like those by Foundry, Essex and Irregular. What I'm most stumped on are bald, priestly types. This surprises me. Foundry has a nice pack but it has too many duplicates for my taste. Dark Fable has some lovely offerings, but still not quite what I'm looking for. While typing this I just remembered Wargods of Egyptos (sp?) - maybe I should check them.

3.) Apes: this one breaks my heart. Obelisk Miniatures produced exactly what I was looking for (the two great ape packs) but they seem to be dead in the water - nothing seems available.  :'( I'd love any leads on aggressive ape types; sculpts of actual gorillas tend to look too placid: what I want is something menacing, toothy, intent on feasting on mighty-thewed heroes and lovely maidens...

4.) Koth: this is basically the Hittites. Do you think Assyrians would look the part? If not, are there suitable Hittite types out there? Something else?

So there you are. I'm sorry to be so long-winded, and don't expect help on all the above. Just a single tip for one area would be great. Specific figure recommendations are what I'm especially looking for, so please fire away if you know of any!

Finally, if there is any part of the Hyborian World that you find intriguing for a project, I'd love to know what it is. I'm looking for inspiration!

Many thanks in advance,

Daryl

North Star did some sinister oriental types for A fistful of King Fu. Is it Brigade games that carries these ranges in the US?

As for Apes the Lucid Eye range which Warlord now has under the title Savage Core might be suitable https://store.warlordgames.com/collections/savage-core

I assume you have seen the Monolith Conan game... lots of figs in that.

Mellis - I have, thank you!

Sir Theo, the wizards/demons pack from Fistful is perfect for some characters. The Lucid Eye apes are impressive as well. Thank you kindly!

Not sure if/when or how many of these are available, but this Indiegogo might have some useful things for Stygia.

A man after my own heart!

Chinese, I'd use Renegade I think. Monsters? Maybe Bushido, though I'm not impressed by the fiddly sculpts.

Stygia, I'd use Foundry Egyptians or Dark Fable. Crocodile does exactly the priests you want in their Asar line for Wargods.

Apes are my pet project! Lucid Eye are small, a bit larger than a big chimp. Crooked Dice do a spectacular giant aggressive gorilla. 😍

Koth, Foundry make the best Hittites.
If you wanted to go slightly smaller, the Cutting Edge minis for Egyptians and Hittites are wonderful, but will be dwarfed by your Bronze Age minis, jarringly so.

Good luck! Dark Fable's Temple of Set collection should be in the hands of every Conan fan, and Forge of Ice has a ton of useful stuff too.
Enjoy!

Khurasan do a 15mm giant ape that works well as a big, aggressive one in 28mm:

I'm no expert on Hyboria, but I did enjoy this podcast on the development of the setting:

Here is a big, nasty gorilla:

And the incoming serpent men for Ghost Archipelago (in September) would be perfect for...well, serpent men:

Oh, and check these from Rogue miniatures:

Some more very helpful leads. Thank you all!

Hobgoblin: the Khurasan gorilla looks fabulous. Never would have thought of it, so thank you!

Davies: those are some great figures I didn't know about. Though I think I'm covered in the Barbarian area I'll tuck those away for future reference; another good ape!; and those lizard men look tasty indeed.

Lead Asbestos: what an incredible set of tips! Renegade is a company I forget about - I agree that the Chinese could do very well as Khitans. I'll check out the gorilla by Crooked Dice. I'm also guardedly intrigued by Forge of Ice; I say guardedly because they don't seem to have a website and it's rather difficult to determine what their status is. I've sent an e-mail to an address found on the web and will see if there's a response. My word do they have some lovely sculpts, though! I appreciate your taking the time to reply! Now off for some more research... ;)

Alxbates here on LAF is the man behind Forge of Ice and he is as excellent a gentleman you'll ever deal with. Drop him a line here or join up on Facebook and he'll hook you up with whatever you need. I'm anxiously awaiting his next KS!

I just remembered Wargods of Egyptos (sp?) - maybe I should check them.

you should they have a lot of nice figures and the scale pretty well with Dark Fable.
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it anymore and what is it seems weird and scary.

Heya Arundel!

I'm Alex, Forge of Ice is me :)

My primary web presence is on Facebook, but if you've got any questions about my stuff I'd be happy to answer them here on the LAF (I've got a thread in the Pulp sub-forum here or via PM).

Glad to hear you like my stuff!  Edgar Rice Burroughs is probably my biggest influence, but Robert E Howard is likely #2.  I like to think that a lot of my minis would work well in Conan games.

-Alex
