Grymn Martian Patrol
« on: July 17, 2017, 02:16:29 PM »
I decided it was high time I painted some more Grymn... so I did. They are a Martian Patrol (after the terraforming event has occurred) and have got as far as the wash phase:

I still need to highlight and base them :)

Here is an album for the WIP images (if you are bothered ;) ):

The first two are finished now:

This is the first time I have ever used crackle paint and I think it looks OK. I need to get it a bit thicker on the base to get more of a crackle effect but, as I go along, I'll get the levels worked out :) .

They look good.

What paint did you use? I have only used the Citadel one on trees for a bark effect.

I used Vallejo colours for the miniatures (apart from the Dwarf Flesh for the faces and Agrax Earthshade wash (both GW) and Iron Grey (Coat D'Arms) on the weapons) and the base texture is Martian Ironearth (GW).

These gryms look fantastic! Nice to see them painted. What adventures await them?
I should be painting right now.

Why would women's  armor have boobie plates?  Just wondering.  Very nice miniatures BTW.

Next to be painted will be the three characters that will accompany them as mercenaries :) .

Cheers :)

I've started on the first of the mercenaries and have also dug four more out, cleaned them up and glued them to the base. I just need to wait for the putty to dry before hitting them with primer :)

Looking pretty good! :)

With respect to the crackle paint, I have a few suggestions that you might want to consider:

- Paint a darker colour onto the base first, as this shows through the crackled paint later on and gives a better definition.

- Apply some gloss varnish (polyurethane is better than acrylic IMO) after the darker base colour is on, but before applying the crackle paint. This helps the cracks develop better.

- Apply the crackle paint pretty thickly, preferably with a little unevenness. This helps gives you bigger and more varied cracking, and looks a bit more natural.

- Once dry, mix a little matte medium with some clean water (about 1:1 or 2:3), and paint a good thin even layer over the whole base. This mattes down the gloss in the cracks, and helps the smaller cracked flakes stick a little more firmly so that you don't get any of them coming off.

Cheers :)

I'm just learning with the crackle paint and I will take on board some of the advice here, when I start on the project that I am really keen to use this on properly :) .

As for this patrol... the Grymn have hired a mercenary tracker called Roddy:

The next units... support mechs, snipers, a specialist with HMG and a pair of special ops characters:
