2ft x 2ft Skirmish Wargames Board for 28mm
« on: 19 July 2017, 05:00:01 PM »
2'x2' board for skirmish gaming. Needs some varnish to protect surfaces and a decision made on either clear water effects resin or gloss varnish for the stream - though it isn't, ideally, deep enough for the resin, as the instructions say it should be poured to a depth of 1/8" (2.5mm) and that's a little too deep for this model.

The board appears generic enough to, hopefully, see it used for a variety of periods and subjects. Primarily it was built to take up to the Catterick Garrison gaming club for Bushido, but I'm sure it'll see use elsewhere.

Very nice. I'd be tempted to try a layer of water effect as it would add some nice depth to the watercourse. You may be right that some of the rocks,  etc get drowned though.

Thanks all

I took a measurement the other day and I should, just, get away with pouring the recommended 1/8" water effects resin. It is just the agonising wait for a warm, dry day ... blooming rain.

I'm desperate to try that resin, though. Even if it means I mess this board up. Perfect excuse to build another  :)

One day I might get to the point I could do something decent and put on a game at Shildon show  ;D

Delightful board.  8)

A glistening, reflective surface to the stream would be great.

Yeah, Resin should work decently for it.

You might also consider some of the cheaper 2 Part epoxy resin that a lot of stores have in essentially a split syringe, then stippled with mod podge for ripples.

Very nice.
I'm planning some of those for Bushido as well, if a lot less generic.

The fun thing about those 2 by 2's is that you can make something really nice, since it's a small project.

Thanks all. Nothing new to show, yet. The weather where I'm at is terrible, and I'd rather wait for a warm dry day (I've a lot of varnishing to do as well on figures). And I'm also painting up display figures for the Colonel Bill's show stand for Edinburgh, which have jumped to the front of the 'to do' list. Hopefully the board will get finished soon  :)

I haven't done too much in the way of anything meaningful, hobby-wise, of late. In fact, all I've done since Partizan show the other weekend is pour some water effect resin onto the 2'x2' gaming board I made - as shown below.

The board is meant to be used for a variety of purposes, so for the purposes of these photo's I've used some of the trees I based for my Old West collection and a few of the buildings that I scratch built for Frostgrave. They don't look too out of place on the board, so will serve purpose as gaming terrain for my immediate needs - namely Star Trek skirmishing using the Mutants and Death Ray Guns rules.

The board is finished (except for a varnish coat on the brown frame), and I may take another look at those ruins and see if they can be improved upon. I've also some other trees that need the bases finishing, so I may base those to match this board.

Cheers,
Roy

Roy,

A couple of questions:

The ruins look very clean and sterile - are you planning to dirty them up at all?

The trees are great shapes - where did you get them from (I guess eBay and China but may be wrong)?
