What a lovely army. The shields are superb, love the design and execution of them. Some of the tunic patterns are really impressive, those early 'tartans/checks'  look terrific.

A truly wonderful looking army. I particularly like the way you have achieved visual coherence without making them too unformed looking

Well done Richard. What an inspiring project, well painted and documented.

Master stroke in recruiting Simon as adviser.

Looking forward to seeing and reading more of this sort.

Cheers

Thank you everyone for your support. I am very, very happy that a cohesive army without too much uniformity was achieved and noticeable to others. Thank you everyone for your kind words.

@ Jericho, thanks for the link. But I didn't forget at all 8): they're different armies that I'll take contingents from to augment depending on scenario. This one takes up two boxes. My unpainted Goths take up six, unpainted Franks take up three, unpainted Alans take up two. Saxons are another three.

That's not counting the Comes Britannia and Continental field armies, Huns, Picts, and Irish raiders, Dumnonians, Gwent, Amorica and Bagaudae. Whew, I have a lot of painting to do!!!!! :o Guess that's the reason I disappear sometimes :D.

Don't forget Sassanids. I know you liked those Aventine's.  :D

Well done, Richard. I found this to be very inspiring for my own wargames armies. I have Romano-British as well as Late Romans and I have thought of having a Gallo-Roman vs.Huns as a campaign scenario. I was pleased to see your army as, like you, my infantry have the armoured men in the front rank and the rear rank unarmoured.
I shall read up about this period,it's one that I only know about from the British/Vortigan/Arthurian viewpoint, so there's lots to learn.I am looking forward to it.
Once again, big thanks for a very inspiring article. Good luck with the house move !

I do, I do. But if I start buying another large army right now, my wife would probably divorce me lol

Thank you for the kind words, Druid.

I really love this period when everything is falling apart and small petty kingdoms pop up. Not only smaller armies and war bands but also many more sides to play. I was thinking of Gaul and Spain as simply an extension of what was happening in Britain. Continental Arthurians, in a sense.

Thanks

Really like the mix of figures you've used and the semi- uniformed appearence, its a very impressive force. Look forward to seeing some of the other forces you mentioned completed.

Such a nice project.  I'd love to fight them with my Saxons.

This is a great use for your overflow troops.  :D
