Travel Paintrack
« on: 20 August 2017, 09:09:20 PM »
Hi Guys

You know the pain if you want to go for a painting and gaming Weekend with buddies, but your paints and brushes need to move too? . So nice and clean all these commercial Desktop Paintrack solutions are, they are not all very Travel friendly. Aside this I only have a small Tablespace that needs sharing with modelling, Terrainbuilding and so on. So I wanted a neat solution for my Paints to store and came up to this concept that I did with my Laser. When I don`t need the paints I can store them in a shelf like Woodbox without taking too much room for them.

Cheers Delta

That looks really nice!  Was it a pain to assemble?

Well its the first prototype. Some minor adjustments have still to be done but overall its not harder to assemble as a simple mdf building. I used a good amount of express pva glue to hold anything tight together. After the Finetuning of this one I need a second Version to hold up my. Citadel colors.

Great stuff 8)

I've basically done up the same idea many years ago in plasticard, to fit into some small plastic cases I was given!

One is a paint rack (and not pain track, as I read it first lol ), holding 15 dropper bottles, a couple of brushes and small tools, has a foam lined compartment for one or two miniatures, a small pallette tray (the lid from some small metal candy container) and a piece of cloth:

I use it to paint whenever I'm traveling for work and have to stay in hotels for days (as the lure of sad hotel bars has worn off long ago ::) ). It's light, fits in my travel bag and so far has never proven an issue when taken through customs and security at train and airport terminals, even with metal miniatures in there.

Here's the thread, with more pictures, I introduced my cases in, way back in 2014 (although they've been in use since a year before that): KA-LINK!

Your design certainly looks nice too. The weight of the MDF/HDF might prevent it from being a true travel case though, and you'd have to create an extra design to hold everything else one might need when painting. Also, I'd be worried about the amount of abuse an MDF/HDF case would be able to take, but to be honest, that's just a feeling...

Still; for those who want something small to hide in a cupboard in the livingroom to prevent having to  drag a serving tray full of painting gear down (or up) when they want to get some painting done while the wife watches her favorite show but still wants them near, this might be a great addition ;)

Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Oh this Case solution is really cool too! I haven`t recognized your thread down the days in 2014. I think your Case solution is the far better Travelcase because its more lightweight and rigide. For me its important to have the benefits of a real big paintrack, but still storeable. Thats why I brought function over wieght and durability.

Yes; it will do that perfectly I reckon! 8) You could have sorted boxes for different projects, so you'd have all required paints handy in one go. Just store them like books on your shelf, maybe with a (temporary?) label on the side to identify each one? that would be really cool and useful.

One suggestion; maybe add another ridge under the bottom row of bottles, to hold them at the same height as the ones in the top two rows? Now the bottom 5 bottles drop down to the bottom of the case, with just the tapered top of the bottles in the holes, where it would be better to have the full girth of the bottles there.

And a question; I presume those small holes in the bottom row are for brushes? So is the box large enough to hold brushes in there when closed, or do you have to remove them?

Yes the Holes in the Front are for brushes. The Box is 22cm tall so its no Problem to put the brushes in there as well, but in the current Form, they would come out through the open part at the Bottom. The Signs with the description of the content is on the Topside of the Box and will be individual lasered in as soon as I have finished the General Design and have just to produce the final Boxes. The Final ones will not stay in these ugly MDF look, but will get some fancy wodden furnier surface finish :-) Luxury kills the cat you know^^
Its the first rough prototype and exactly those things you mentioned are the points I have to work on. Same with the holding structures beneath the Bottles. I´m not yet really satisfied with the results on these so far. I´ve 250 MDF Sheets in my Workshop atm, so plenty of material to play around with xD.
