1793-98 War in Holland, Flanders campaign
« on: October 18, 2017, 08:22:08 PM »
Some pictures of the gunners for the victoriousminiatures.com range of figures, covering the war in Holland against the French republic.
The gunner have "mother shipton hats" peculiar to this period, Mark Sims sculpts.

Artillery, 2 guns commissioned a 3pdr and 6pdr, quite different to the cannons used later in Spain and France.

And some more line infantry .

The non-bicorne figures are very good.  Nice to see someone doing this era.

Just one point, the bicornes are a bit small (they look more like the Prussian "casquet" of the same period) and aren't worn perfectly side-to-side as you have them, but angled over the forehead; this is in part to avoid knocking them off when handling the musket, but is also a "fashion" thing for officers.  The higher crown is more mid-Napoleonic, so you want a lower crown and wider corners.  The Hewgill plates give a better idea of the size, shape and method of wearing:

https://www.napoleon-series.org/military/organization/Britain/Infantry/c_Hewgill.html

This is a very difficult thing to do well; the look is not dissimilar to the French "chapeau" (often wrongly called a bicorne), and very few sculptors get these right, either.

Hope that helps.
No plan survives first contact with the dice.

These look very nice.
Do you have pictures of British troops in the 1793-1795 flanders campaign wearing the "mother shipton hats"?. Up to now I haven't seen this kind of hat in the pictures I have of this campaign but I admit that I haven't explore the British army in this period probably enough.
Thanks

Duc,

You can see artwork for the Osprey MAA on Wellington's Infantry (1) here; look on the right hand side and there are three colour plates with troops wearing the Mother Shipton hat, and you can see it morphing into the "round hat" as worn by the Marines of the time.

https://ospreypublishing.com/store/military-history/period-books/napoleonic/wellington-039-s-infantry-1-pb

Unfortunately, you need to be an Osprey Club Member to see them in more detail.  However, I have the book (somewhere) and from memory, there are references in the plate captions to contemporary artwork.

Dear Baron,
thanks for your reply.
Sadly I am no member of the Ospry club so can't see the pictures (or references)  :(

I have browsed the internet for pictures but only can find British artillery uniforms of the 1793-1795 period in bicorne or top hat (with or without crest). A drawing of a gunner in Bruges 1793 shows a top hat with turned up left and right brim. Sadly don't know how to copy it in.
The book "British military uniforms" by Hew Strachan mentions "Black round hats were, in fact, worn in the 1790s and were the issue on service in Holland in 1794" but no pictures are added.

So I am just curious about the hats.

Of course I applause the effort by Victorious to make these British figures and hope they add more so I can expand my early French Revolutionaries armies.

I'm out for the rest of the weekend, but will try and dig out the book, see what it says, and post it up on here for you.
