Alternating Rows of Metal and Painted/Dyed Scales
« on: 05 November 2017, 06:11:19 PM »
Matthew Amt over on Bronze Age Center posted some pictures of his Bronze Age scale armour project back in 2007. The plan was to have alternating rows of (ridged) bronze scales and rawhide scales. The rawyhide is dyed a dull red, giving a rich effect when interlaid with the bronze scales. Of interest to hobbyists around here:

Would make strong looking painting, definitely.

Just how accurate, historically, would this be? (Maybe we cannot know, since leather doesn't preserve well in most conditions.)

Thanks for the info.

I took 20 seconds to google the man himself, and you can see what he is up to now.

Which is actually even more interesting.

The second link he gives more detail specifically relating to his work and research on Bronze Age armor.

Painted bronze scales seem to have been pretty common - look at the Qadesh reliefs.
