Best VSF skirmish rules?
« on: April 11, 2009, 10:36:23 AM »
Hi

I cannot for my death remember, if someone has told me this before, but what rules would you gentlemen recommend for small-scale VSF skirmish games with a 'weird adventure' twist (C'thulhu-esque monsters, Gothic Horror, Lost Worlds)?

I guess I could easily adopt Fantastic Worlds with a little work - on the other hand I would like some rules already containing Jules Verne-ish contraptions...

Well... I'm off to get some stuff from Ironclad. You can start calling me Darth Argo, or something...  ;)

Now, where did I put those WF British Firing Line Plastics...?
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

I would recommend the "GASLIGHT" family of rules. It covers everything from large-scale battles to RPGs and any sort of contraption or creature is easily incorporated  :D

Ah, yes... G.A.S.L.I.G.H.T should be good.... thanks... I had that name in my head, but thought it was more for a step up from skirmishes...

I'm off to find the rules....

Well, wer all had a massive game of gaslights, about 15 big vehicles including walkers and fliyers, plus big monsters and everything basically. It was good.

Well Darth Argo, Darth Gluteus has suggested the daddy of all VSF rules in GASLIGHT.

There is also Valour and Steel and Flesh by Parroom Station which have all the desired bits and pieces,(vehicles, monsters etc) They are very similar to GASLIGHT and are based on Brother Against Brother the ACW rule set designed for 10 figure skirmish groups.

I hav ethem, but we always play GASLIGHT instead. :)

Maybe I should use my last name instead... Darth Kragh has a certain.... flavour..  lol

Where in the Web's name do I get the rules, when their official site is down?

Some web vendor has them, mayhaps?

I'll try Brigade - they always have what I cannot find elsewhere  ;)

Darth Kragh it is then :D

I got mine from Caliver Books or, perhaps it was Spirit Games, anyway one of them. But be careful some sellers charge a lot for the books, don't pay over ?10 per book.
For small games you will be ok with the basic rules, for the large battles we played at BLAM you would need Battles By Gaslight as well.

I just bought the Basic Rules, the Adventures & Expeditions supplement, and the Pulp (To be continued...) supplement - along with some WWWII (Spyglass) Russian and civilian Zombies, and a couple of German Sinister Men. Minis not for GL, but it's about time I start using the many pre-painted WWII minis I've got from JohnnyTodd (I think it is)...

Battles may follow if I ever get that many minis painted up - but maybe I can bring a small contingent of Brits in HSU next time I go to London.... for a larger battle...  ;) Ordered 2 packs of infantry + one command pack from Ironclad earlier today... and I do have 5 painted HLBS ones standing guard or at parade already....

In my opinion, VS&F is the better system, as it has far more period flavor. GASLIGHT is fine, but it's a bit generic, and can get tedious after a while. It's basically only as good as what you put into it.

I don't mind generic - especially if it lets me build my own steam contraptions to use with it.

I'll try out GASLIGHT, first, and then, if I think I need more flavour, I'll maybe buy VS&F (Nice acronym ;)  ).

Thanks all!!

As always a pleasure to ask questions in here!  :)

True enough, but for me that's a large part of the attraction. I can easily adapt it to suit my idea of VSF without too much effort. It can be as silly and illogical as I like and, since I play mainly solo, nobody complains, not even the voices  :-I

I've got G.A.S.L.I.G.H.T, but became bored just reading them. It is indeed far too generic.

Anyone know where I can get VS&F in the UK?

Valor, Steel & Flesh, from Parroom Station. I'm told they're rather spiffing;

I bought WHH's The Great War at Salute, which I may use instead (with some changes). I'd still like a copy of VS&F, though.
