Jacobite Standard Bearer
« on: December 10, 2017, 10:14:22 PM »
hi,

During a trip to Highlands with the old fella I couldn't help but take a shine to the '45 Rebellion. So after a slow start here's my take on the standard bearer a Clan Chattan standard bearer  who according to my dad who should know as he's from Glasgow is the family clan. Clan Chattan is a bit of a mix of family's who stuck together for mutual protection and also  took a bit of a hammering at Culloden. The flag is conjectural with the shape of the  scroll and the motto taken from an old image of a Mackintosh coat of arms found on Pinterest and the Scottish wildcat badge is from a 19th century depiction however seems to be the most common  emblem used to illustrate Clan Chattan.  The figure is from Crann Tara; I've got quite a few of these to do on my painting table and cracking sculpts they are too; now I just need to decide on the rules.

Very impressive, especially as he is about 6 times real size on screen.

Rules wise, I suppose it depends what kind of scale battle you want to go for, but Pikeman's Lament might well be worth a look.

Great stuff, I like your abstract style, it works particularly well with the tartan ;D

"Touch Not The Cat..." -- one of my all-time favorite clan mottos. Especially since I'm allergic to cats... lol

Hard not to contemplate Jacobite gaming when traveling the highlands, islands, and glens. I spent 5 weeks there on a summer vacation many years ago. Still my favorite adventure in all my travels.

Great start! Are you looking for skirmish games, or full-blown battles?

Such an interesting approach to painting tartan.  Did you do it with acrylics?  Is it just layered or something else?

hi and  thanks for the positive comments. With regards to the rules I was thinking more larger scale battles than skirmish and have been toying with adapting the Tercios rules by Liber Militum,  however I would have each commander activate all units under his command at once rather than unit by unit as this better reflects, with my limited knowledge the linear warfare at the time.

Rampantion, thanks for the comments on the tartan. I start by painting block colours, then boldly highlight then , following this I paint various criss cross lines finishing with the lightest one and finish with a wash of 'Aly's brown liquid. I then highlight the rest of the figure and leave the tartan well  alone. Some colours look better than others but I think the overhaul effect looks canny. I'll put some more picks up over the holidays.

cheers Pete

A typical Scot 'awash with brown liquid'!

Hopefully you will do a few Appin clansmen (Whither will ye)

Most of the clans got a kicking at Culloden (and after).

So it’s all done with acrylics?  Impressive!
