I'd say rough concept sketches could be shown, but please don't post drawings or sketches of the final version before the start.

Well I have only a rough idea anyway of the build. I probably make it up as I go. As usually

Can I echo the comment about starting early? I’ve got a my first kid due at the end of January ..... .....and I can see me not finishing!

You could start and post pics after the start - nudge nudge, wink wink.....
Andym's an exception of course as he has a really good reason to do so, and is the holder of the title - it's a bit like free pass to the world cup for the previous winners  .

 I'm (almost) back on my two feet now, just had a major operation last Friday and as I had information about the coming surgery and time it would and will take to recover I just had to pass this time. Hopefully indeed better chance of entering next year.

Good to hear it's been done and you're getting well - I hope the competition this year gives you a cool spectacle to sit back and have something to watch.

As late as possible i.e. in a little over a week 
Seriously: a delay in progress is accepted, just as some entrants get their act together and ready for painting in a brief time...

What about building some sort of medieval siege weapon that’s about one stage away from exploding or ending up as splinters?

You can't withdraw now, the deadline is over   
Seriously - as Andym pointed out, anything which is high risk and has the potential to blow up in your face, or break down spectacularly, or prove to be horribly unreliable can work.
