Creating Hexes?
« on: January 13, 2018, 05:27:40 AM »
I want to create some 'concentric' hexes for basing some terrain, towns mostly.  The reason for concentric hexes is to have the smaller, inner hex as the main base and the outer portion of the larger hex in combination with its twin from an adjacent hex to create roads or other elements between sections.  This will allow interchangeability so I have a variety of setups with the same bases.

Oh, the bases will be multiple buildings per base - not so challenging in my chosen scale of 15 mm.

My question is does anyone have the math worked out for creating hexes that I can extrapolate for my needs?

Thanks if you do.

I've found these useful.
Formulas and diagrams for hexagons can be found here with an online tool to do the math:
https://rechneronline.de/pi/hexagon.php
https://www.omnicalculator.com/math/hexagon

Basically, the long diagonal is 2x the length of a edge with inside angles of 120 each but like to think as being made up of 6 smaller equilateral triangles with 60 degree inside angles.

Here is the no math method: just use a compass set to the edge length of the hex or half the length of the long diagonal of the hexagon (radius r). Draw a circle (radius r), then set the compass point on the circle where you want the first vertex to be. Draw an arc bisecting the circle and this will give you the next vertices. Move the compass point to the next vertex and repeat until you have all six. Note that you can just draw a line through the center of the circle from one vertex to give you the opposite vertex to minimize compass use.

Or here is an online hex generator you can use to create a pdf of any hex size you want. Create a template and transfer to your material.

Hope that helps

As above a set of compasses do all the work for you...

Braz and Rich H., thanks, those links will do the trick.  Humakt, I appreciate the input but I need a bit more precision for this project than freehand will allow - though since it will involve a jigsaw exact precision won't work but it does need to be pretty close for everything to fit together as I envision.

Again, thanks.

If you were closer I'd offer to laser cut a template...
but I suspect postage will be excessive!
Let me know if I you are interested.

there's a few companies that will cut large mdf hex's, tho the names escape me at the moment.
never trust a horse, they make a commitment to shoes that no animal should make.

Not MDF, but the Woodcrafter at least used to have some hexes as options for their pre-cut plywood pieces and they also have custom work that doesn't really cost much for simple shapes if you go for a full sheet's worth of them

I’ve used Warbases to create hexes of different sizes and even connected (3 - 7 joined) ones.

The other way is to use Word to draw different sized ones to start with and use them as a template or guide for sizing.

Thanks, Braz! Would you know whether the online hex generator's "size" parameter is the distance between two opposite edges or the length of an edge?

I see that you're in Ottawa - do you play Pulp Alley?
