What essential buildings should a spaceport have?
« on: January 31, 2018, 05:35:01 PM »
I have been collecting space toys for a while with a view to building my own spaceport for Rogue Stars games. I have 3 large spaceships in the beginning stages of conversion, and several small ones. Nothing worth taking a photo of yet.
I figured the large spaceships would sit out on a landing field with plenty of space while the small ones could be parked on platforms clustered around the spaceport buildings for easy access. ( That also gets them off the ground so I can use ramps and stairways that create interest and different levels while also saving space!)

Now I was wondering what buildings would be essential even for a rough spaceport out on the frontier.
So far I have thought:

1. Large cargo sheds and warehouses with vehicles (robots?)to move and load and unload freight from ships.*
2. Traffic Control tower
3. Some sort of rudimentary passport control/customs gate/building. (With perhaps an attached guardroom for troops/star cops!)
4. Maintenance and Repair facilities for space ships*
5. A Hotel!
6. A processing centre for unfortunate poorer travellers and assorted ruffians who cannot afford the hotel. (The future is a harsh place) This should look a bit of a dump.
7. A perimeter wall or fence around the complex. (With weak points to break in!)
8. Shanty town just outside the walls. This should be a mix of alien and human type dwellings, as to the occupants own taste and styles, but all jumbled together. I admit I am stumped here. I don't like the Tattooine desert look or the Wild Western type look. Open to ideas.
9. Medical Centre.

* I think items 1 and 4 could be represented by single buildings on the edge of the layout to suggest more of them off-table

Comments welcome! I would especially like if people had ideas for specific buildings that would fit the bill from any MDF manufacturers available in UK?
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

Hangars or docking stations for the space ships?

if not based in human friendly planet what about life support facilities (air processing, waste recycling, heating systems, etc).
Think about the source of income in your spaceport, if trade based then should be building related to the trade goods, trading with aliens, then maybe some alien building to fit the needs of the alien population.
Far deep in stace station to me sounds like mining station, I think you need to re-watch Outland

I would think you'd need some sort of fueling depot as well.

I think I would put that in with the maintenance facilities, but good point.
The universe I am using is from the Gaean Reach books of Jack Vance, which have an FTL drive for the space ships

Thanks for the images, I really like the Stanchion Building, it has an alien look. That's on my list now.

House of ill repute.
Shops (food/weapons/tech/banks/clothing/tools/vehicles/travel, even toy soldiers)
Rubbish tip.
Small, Taxi like, vehicles to get you away from the space port.
As to the shanty-town, seek inspiration from the, all to many, images of such things on this planet, right now.

Also a good point. For the purposes of playing Rogue Stars games my planets will mostly be human habitable type planets, but definitely I would like the alien buildings to look alien.
In the Jack Vance books many planets are unique tourist attractions and that is a major source of income. Others are closeted worlds that have been settled by peoples of various religions or philosophies who do not like outsiders and place various restrictions on visitors.

All good ideas, thanks! A bordello never occurred to me, pure in thought as I am...

I sort of like the notion of different landing pads, perhaps different heights with service lifts and cargo lifts, perhaps with some smaller structures off to the sides of the pads for things like passenger lounges, cantina's, bars, duty free types . . . . and then perhaps more industrial types such as cargo storage (warehouses, container yards etc), shipping deppo and haulage company offices. I guess some form of security as well.

I realise that might be a lot, but they are all of the things that come to mind when I consider ideas for a spaceport.

Maybe based around something a little bit like this:

I really like theoverview you've done for your Spaceport. You only need a Cantina , as stated above aaaaaand a Landspeeder / speeder bikes rental

And maybe a small fire station?

From what I understand of Rogue Stars, it allows for a lot of fine-grained detail in what minis can do, so a speeder rental place might allow for characters to commandeer their own transport around parts of the base!

In the same vein, a garage containing some future equivalents of all those tiny service vehicles that motor about modern airports could be cool.

Some form of security building, maybe some defensive turrets, Garages for towing/maintenance vehicles.

Don't forget a wind-sock as well :)

Lighting stanchions... and I know it's not a building but as well as landing pads, I would expect to see a runway or two.
