LPL as a knockout competition?
« on: May 08, 2009, 02:03:54 PM »
Would this be better as a knockout competition?

Winners of each round go through and are drawn against each other until its down to the last two.

Bit like the FA Cup - two good teams and two not-so-good teams can be drawn together in each round.

Could make it more exciting...?

When you absolutely, positively have to kill every motherf****** in the room, accept no substitute.

No.

I find the LPL so exciting already I couldn't actually take any more... :)

Nope not at all.

Could make it more exciting...?

Maybe.  But it wouldn't give everyone an excuse to paint around 50 miniatures in 10 weeks, and I think it would put some people off, as most of us would know we wouldn't get very far.

The only reason I am in the league is to push me to paint.  Winning hasn't even crossed my mind.

There are other places where one can indulge in knockout competitions but none that focus on painting large groups of minis each and every week.

In the end, no matter where you are in the standings, if you can bear up to the pressure you are a near wargame painting God.

Which is why I find it so "interesting" that folks are so intense this time around.  Takes a lot of the fun out of it, IMO.

Knockout would ruin it. Changing the league format to a knockout tourney would fundamentally alter the nature of the thing, and completely destroy what it originally was designed to be when the Prof set it up (not to mention the fact that it would need a new name). If you don't think it's exciting enough, then why don't you enter? You'll have the added joy and heartbreak of watching your babies shine (or burn!) then. It's not too late to join up for this season.

This League is as much (or more) for the participants as it is for the spectators.

I don't like the idea of a knockout, it would mean not being able to participate in all rounds if you wanted or were able to.

Its a great comp to get us all painting.

I know for one I'm a bit tense and nervous about putting minis up for voting.

But the great thing is I found that 35 more people other than me liked my mini's in round one and so far 62 in round two. Nicely reassuring.

Can't wait for next round. 8)

sadly for me though I got a nasty return of Iritis in my left eye and have not been able to see to paint for over a week due to blurred vision and pain in focusing. So at the moment I have no round 4 or 5 entries ready and not sure whether I will be. :?

A real shame but that's life.   ;)

Yeah, I have no expectations of winning whatsoever so if it were a knock out I just wouldn't get involved.
I've used this as an opportunity to rummage through my lead as it pushes me to paint.
I think the way it is now is great.

Speaking as the proud occupant of the very, very bottom of the rankings: no knockout format, please!  lol

My round 3 painting and photo are (IMO) significantly better than the previous two attempts, and round 4 is coming together beautifully. Need to get stuck into those damn horses for 5, though. Won't miss another round of bonus points!

(maybe I'll just pretend that LPL is scored like rummy, where LOWEST score wins. Yeah, that works... ;) )

I agree, no knockout for future competitions, please...!

It sounds like a lot of us are in the same boat, ie: we're in it for the fun and to push us to paint more/faster.

Frankly, I think it's running very well (brief hiatus aside ::)) and I can't really think of any changes I'd like to make for future comps.

No knock out it would just not be the same.
It would also mean less great pictures to see on a Monday morning. :'(
The league, as it is, is great. Teaching me how to paint my figures for photographs. Is has also helped me improve my photography skills massively. I think my round three entry is my best photo yet.
The league has also really helped me paint things that have been on my workbench and lead pile for ages.
Don’t changes it. >:(

Did anyone already turn this idea down? No? ;) Well, in that case I think it has no place in the gentlemanly sport that LPL is.

If you want a knock out, football style comp check out Steve Dean's site.

The LAF league is just as exciting in it's own way, we don't need two the same.

Are the rules posted somewhere?

Thankfully it's not a knockout. Too often two incredible paint jobs are pitted against each other, while elsewhere two lesser quality paint jobs compete. Hopefully the system weeds out the lesser quality and promotes the good.

Either way, there are some very talented painters out there.

No knockout, that would be the dead of the league. A lot of people take part with no chance of winning just for the fun of it. Getting thrown out on turn 1 would be frustrating.
If you come for the king, you better not miss (Omar)
