Some of the helpful folks on the Saga Thorsday Discord recommend adding the Hired Sword Jarl Sigvaldi to my Pagan Rus warband.

I’m not entirely sold on Sigvaldi, but as I was finishing up my Jómsvíking Warlord I realized that by painting  a few more HG minis  (which I can use in my Joms warband as HG), I’ll have the models I need to field Sigvaldi and his men as a Hired Sword unit.

I used a different backdrop and  lighting, to better depict the shade of blue I see IRL when I look at the models under good light conditions.

They look very much the part. Great work. We've seen Sigvaldi's lot wreak havoc in Pagan Rus armies, there's a reason he comes so highly recommended.

Really gorgeous stuff. I just picked up a bag of the Pagan Rus from victrix myself. I'm at the same stage of deciding on shields wat the moment.

Do you mind sharing what paints you used for a couple of the colors? Specifically the dark blue grey on some of the tunics and the darker red tone on some of the shields?

Off white primer (bone). Base coat of Dark Reaper. Washed with Agrax. First highlight thinned Dark Reaper. Second highlight thinned Dark Reaper mixed with GS Karak Stone. Third highlight the same as a second hilight but with a small amount of Thunderhawk Blue added.

For shields, I apply the LBM transfer. Once dry I apply by brush Army Painter Anti-Shine Matt Varnish. Once dry I carefully go over the red areas of the LBM transfer with a GW Khorne red which is very watered down. It's not quite watered down enough to make it wash, but its close. It's watered down enough that if the red areas of LBM transfers have dark lines depicting sword strikes and battle damage, the damage shows through the thin coat of red. If you want to darken the shield damage, once the red is dry you can carefully go over the slashes and damage with a dark brown. I use GW Rhinox Brown.

To keep a smooth surface, I apply multiple thin coats rather than one thick coat, but often you will find one coat to be sufficient. You don't want to entirely paint over the surface, you just want to deepen the shade and let the transfers shield damage and dark spots show through your red.

If you slop over onto boarding parts of the shield with the red, you can carefully touch those up with a matching color.

If you are referring to the red wood shields, I start with coat of Khorne Red. I wash it with Agrax, then once dry I highlight with Khorne Red. Subsequent highlights are a mix of Khorne Red and a little GW Wazdakka Red to lighten the highlight shade. If I do a third highlight, it will be the second highlight colors with a little GW Mephiston Red added.

Keep in mind that the shades of color and details of painted models look different depending on the lighting. Colors viewed under standard overhead lights will appear differently than they do under hobby lamps you work with, or under the lighting setup you use for photography.

I'm leaning towards playing my Rus as Jomsvikings in September, mostly because I am running out of time. Once the viking house and idols are printed, I will need to paint them for my display board. I also need to paint 3 objective markers. Since the tournament includes the Ambush scenario, If time allows, I want to paint enough Rus armed with heavy weapons to field a unit of Warriors with heavy weapons, which will come in quite handy when attacking baggage models.

If you go back through this thread and/or look through my other Saga threads, you will see that I like to build and paint markers for those Saga abilities that 'remain in play'.  They not only serve as a reminder of the ability's ongoing effects, but they give me an excuse to build and paint mini dioramas.

The WIP photo of this model can be found on page 9 of this thread. As I noted earlier, since the Jomsviking Legends Saga ability’s name suggests something legendary (mythic), I decided that the god Heimdall would make a suitable subject for this marker. I'm not a 100% satisfied with how Heimdall turned out, but I have to much painting to do to repaint him.

This morning, I partially disassembled and then primered the pieces for my 3 objective markers.

If you examine the bases closely, you will see that each base has a small pieces of rod sticking up. These rods (which are glued into holes drilled in each base) fit into a hold drilled in the bottom of each detached model's foot.  Since I join the model and base only after both pieces have been painted, the rods help secure the model to the base and give the glue a bit more to hold on to.

The small sections of rod are presently covered in primer, but once the base is painted, I will scrape off the primer and paint on the rod.

I love how Heimdall turned out.  I hope you can field the force you want too by the end of September.

I finished my Pagan Rus Saga Ability markers.

I've never been overly fond of snow bases, and now I've discovered another thing not to like, photographing them. The markers didn’t turn out quite as well as I’d hoped, but they’re finished, and with terrain for my display board still to paint before the September 27 tournament, there’s no time to look back.

These are the pieces I ordered for my Rus board. My plan is to use the house and some of the extras, depending upon how they turn out.
