To boldly go and punch aliens in the face(s)!
« on: May 14, 2009, 02:23:17 AM »
Hi! After seeing the latest Star Trek movie I couldn't help but ponder the possibility of some tabletop ST gaming!

Has anyone got any good sources for a crew? I think GW made one back in the mists of time immemorial but they would be collectors and probably too expensive!

I think the ship crew would be tricky, but without necessarily sticking to canonical ST uniforms, there are probably many, many options for this type of gaming.

It's a tricky one, as it isn't quite in the realms of pulp/retro sci fi as some of the flash gordon-esque ranges out there.

I will keep looking and post anything I find.

Though I like Matakishi's TOS guys, they (as he's said too) are a little small. I've been eyeing these guys from Victory Force miniatures as an alternate:

They have a TNG feel, and the alien crew members are a nice touch, as are the marines and casualties.

I like the VF models quite a lot...and Jim is a terrific sculptor and a really nice guy, as well.

Check out his Conventioneers packs..there is a fanboy in a Star Trek get-up all ready for the con season to start up.  I always thought he would make a nice addition to an away team.

Here's something interesting:

With most Sci Fi, miniatures they all seem a bit too hi tech and war like... which is no surprise as they're often used for wargames! I like Matakishi's idea, and they're nicely executed. VF also look quite good.

Another option for alien races might even be to convert some fantasy figures... aliens always seem to have big foreheads!

I recall that "First Corps" used to have a set (might have been called the Away Team ?) that would probably be ideal, but can't see it on their new website :

Might be worth dropping them a line to ask if they are still available.

I asked about that pack at Triples, and I entered some in LPL3 Week2.  They don't list them on their website, but give them a call and I'm sure they'll sort you out with some :)

They seem to be comparable with Hasslefree, but their "smallness" shouldn't really be a problem if buying alien figures from elsewhere. Personally, I'll be using mine alongside Hasslefrees as well as  Heresy, Copplestone etc, as I'm not overly fussy about exact figure size matching.
