(If anyone can tell me what the thing on the following miniature's left shoulder is, I'd be much obliged.)

I don't think I can enlighten you any more than you already are … it looks like it's an odd shaped lump of armour on the shoulder (?).
'Sir John ejaculated explosively, sitting up in his chair.' ... 'The Black Gang'.

Is there any way I can use the phrase 'what a great 69 entry' without seeming like I've been corrupted by Slaanesh?

Not after that comment you just made ;)

Wow, fantastic entries, and the detail on the Slaaneshi Chaos Warrior's helmets is really well done.

#69 - Een McWrecker (Citadel c1985 'The Tragedy of McDeath')

If you're wondering if you imagined this being earlier in the queue, no, you're not. It has been reposted to abide by the 'one entry per day' rule. I am now once again on the side of the angels.

He's a pain in the arse this one, because he is festooned with loads of poorly defined paraphernalia dangling from various bits. His hat in particular is a haven for tiny shapes and I have had to guess what they are. The thing I have painted as a melty candle on his hat may be something else entirely, but it looked like a melty candle to me, so that's what I'm going with.

What I love about these old models (well, the good old ones … some of the old mins we used to get were shite, let's be honest) is that they have such hidden beauty in them. It's not like the new stuff where the detail is all sculpted on and basically all you need is a base coat and wash to bring it out. That's good and all and I'm sure a help for quick painting, but it doesn't allow for any sort of artistic expression. These old models give scope for a bit of invention - the basic proportions and shape of the faces (for example) are there, but you can paint the same model several times and coax a different sort of emotion or detail out of it. They're little treasure boxes of delight just waiting to be unlocked.

No, it must be your imagination ruining away with you.

I see my joke of posting it as #69 had been moderated to ruin! lol

#70 - orc boy - Citadel 1992

The year I started mini gaming, I guess we all get nostalgia for those first minis (though I never collected greenskins at the time and actually picked this up at the start of this year).

Good to see some love for the Orcs in Orctober. That Ranger/Adventurer is right up my alley as well, just the sort of natural pose and understated min I like.
